  • Triangulation as a research strategy for identifying invisible colleges among biomedical scientists

    Open Access•Leah A Lievrouw, Everett M Rogers et al.•ARTICLE•Social Networks•1987

  • Charm Revisited

Open Access•Andy Pickering, Edward Nadel•ARTICLE•Social Studies of Science•1987

We seek to demonstrate that interpretative and quantitative approaches can be productively integrated in science studies research. We have developed techniques of citation and cocitation analysis which are sufficiently fine-grained to test a pre-existing interpretative analysis of the establishment of the `charm' hypothesis in high-energy physics. We present our quantitative data here and argue that they support, strengthen and extend the prior i…

  • Programmes and Paradigms

    Open Access•Edward Nadel•ARTICLE•Social Studies of Science•1984•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 1

Henk Zandvoort arguesI against the operational indicator of Kuhnian incommensurability proposed in my 'Commitment and Co-Citation' paper2 on the following grounds. First, that the operationalization cannot distinguish between the positions of Kuhn and Lakatos. Here he goes on to outline an explanation for the longitudinal co-citation results in the weak-electromagnetic unification case, using Lakatos's theory. Second, when applying the operationa…

  • Commitment and Co-Citation

    Open Access•Edward Nadel•ARTICLE•Social Studies of Science•1983•Referencias: 3

The consequences of incommensurability for citation practice are operationalized for two case studies of theory competition in physics. It is argued that positive co-citation will be observed if theories are commensurable, but a lack of co-citation among competitors will be observed if theories are incommensurable. Incommensurable theories should be cited with supporting empirical and methodological articles, but not with each other. The operatio…

  • Multivariate Citation Analysis and the Changing Cognitive Organization in a Specialty of Physics

    Open Access•Edward Nadel•ARTICLE•Social Studies of Science•1980•Citada por: 4•Referencias: 1

A retrospective review-textbook account of the history of superconductivity was synthesized and compared with citation and co-citation data for two examples of historical periods which lacked major cognitive events. It was asked whether the formal cognitive organization (the cited documents and the co-cited relationships) remained stable in such periods A thorough cognitive reorganization was observed in both examples in spite of a lack of major …

  • Formal Communication, Journal Concentration and the Rise of a Discipline in Physics

    Open Access•Edward Nadel•ARTICLE•Sociology•1980•Citada por: 1

Several communication theories of science argue that discipline institutionalization in science is reflected in the increased concentration of publications in a few journals. This argument is inspected in the case of superconductivity across seven time periods and using three types of data (current publications, cited publications and highly cited publications). Given certain initial historical contingencies of the case, all three types of data s…
