The Global Temple
The article considers donor marble inscriptions in the Golden Temple complex—otherwise known as Harmandir or Darbar Sahib—a major pilgrimage site in North India especially for Sikh devotees. With the oldest inscriptions from the 1930s, I chart a history of donations through marble (im)materiality, concentrating on contributions marked on walls, floors, steps, and columns. The Currents section foregrounds the work of Indian scholars who examine the ramifications of state responses and counterresponses regarding the Citizenship (Amendment) Act in December 2019. This amendment to the Constitution of India granted citizenship to persecuted minorities from three nearby countries-namely, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan-but not to those who were Muslim. This issue also features a Debate on the place of moralism, moralization, advocacy and politicization within anthropology, focused on two independently submitted, peer-reviewed articles that we saw as coming to related issues from different directions. Gendering Graphics in Indian Superhero Comic Books and Some Notes for Provincializing Cultural Studies
With a focus on the Hindi language superhero comics produced by Raj Comics since the 1980s, this article investigates instances of “modernities in the backyard” and their implications for studying postcolonial popular culture. The graphic narratives in the comic books are neither simply Westernized or transgressive, nor necessarily framed by a mythicized or Orientalised discursive framework.
