Hesiod and Classical Greek Poetry: Reception and Transformation in the Fifth Century BCE
Hesiod was regarded by the Greeks as a foundational figure of their culture, alongside Homer. This book examines the rich and varied engagement of fifth-century lyric and drama with the poetic corpus attributed to Hesiod as well as with the poetic figure of Hesiod. The first half of the book is dedicated to Hesiodic reception in Pindaric and Bacchylidean poetry, with a particular focus on poetics, genealogies and mythological narratives, and dida…
Wounding the Gods
In this article, I explore the figure of the mortal theomachos in archaic Greek hexameter poetry. In particular, I examine how the Iliad and the Hesiodic Aspis construct Diomedes and Heracles respectively in their capacity to fight and wound divine opponents. Through a careful study of these two figures, I argue that they are emblematic of the heroic generations they belong to
Hesiodic Poetry and Wisdom in Plutarch’s Symposium of the Seven Sages
This article examines the ambivalent treatment of Hesiod in Plutarch’s Symposium of the Seven Sages . A close examination of the relevant passages (153E–154C, 156D–E, 157E–158B) demonstrates that, while Hesiod’s authority, poetry, and wisdom are acknowledged, they are nonetheless marginalized and deemed of limited importance for the intellectual life of the Sages. The figure of Hesiod thus facilitates the self-definition of the Sages and their ci…
