Minding the gap
Health and social care providers' perceptions of Black-Canadian parent-youth sexual health communication has important implications for addressing knowledge gaps in the provision of services to young people and their parents. Providers' perceptions are crucial as they often act as advisers in tailoring programmes or services to the perceived needs of parents and youth. To understand these perceptions, 17 semi-structured in-depth interviews were c…
Conspiracy of silence
This phenomenological study examines second-generation Canadian South Asian women’s experiences of an eating disorder, and explores issues of culture conflict in relation to mental health tensions and body/self-concept distortions. Eight second-generation South Asian women who have sought help for an eating disorder participated in semi-structured interviews. Using feminist and transcultural theories, our analyses suggest that body image distorti…
Health capabilities and diabetes self-management
While the "social determinants of health" view compels us to explore how social structures shape health outcomes, it often ignores the role individual agency plays. In contrast, approaches that focus on individual choice and personal responsibility for health often overlook the influence of social structures. Amartya Sen's "capabilities" framework and its derivative the "health capabilities" (HC) approach attempts to accommodate both points of vi…
The Distribution of Mortality in the United States
This article examines how absolute and relative income levels, social capital, and racial/ethnic composition interact to explain variation in age-adjusted mortality rates across the 48 contiguous U.S. states. Our data showed that social capital had a powerful, negative effect on age-adjusted mortality rates--higher social capital states had lower age-adjusted mortality rates. After controlling for other variables, median income moderately related…

Restrained Voices
This research presents the voices of women inmates on health care services in prisons. Foucault's discourse analysis as a means of bringing to the surface restrained voices provides the theoretical basis for this study. The research is based on face-to-face interviews of fifty-six women inmates to understand better the role gender plays in prison health care delivery. The results show that women are willing to discuss only physical ailments and a…
Classroom Organization and Participation
Myriad factors influence students' class participation. This paper develops a path model to delineate students' perceptions of how the classroom's formal and informal structures, along with student attributes, affect self-reported class participation. In our survey, students (n = 1550) report that while organization constrains their participation, students view their interaction with faculty outside the classroom as most important in affecting se…
Resistance to computer innovation
Dr. Lawrence Weed's "knowledge coupling" (KC) computer innovation (Weed, 1991; 1997; 2000) is designed to overcome the widely documented limitations of the human mind. By linking (or "coupling") patient-specific findings with relevant medical knowledge, KC tools exploit the power of the computer to reliably recall, process, and organize vast quantities of medical knowledge and information that would otherwise be missed during the clinical encount…
Assessing Professionalization
This study explores variation in concern about professionalization among NCAA Division I baseball and basketball coaches. Questionnaires were sent to 100 baseball and 100 basketball coaches randomly selected from this population, 129 (65%) of whom responded. Basketball coaches were more inclined to show concern about professionalization than were baseball coaches. Also, older, more experienced baseball coaches showed more concern about profession…
