  • Teacher-Not-Enoughness

    Rachel Ranschaert•ARTICLE•The Teacher Educator•2026

Across the field of teacher education, much attention is paid to what the ideal educator looks like. These ideals are often aspirational and meant to motivate future teachers. Yet, the very notion of an “ideal” can also become a discursive burden, one that positions graduates as perpetually falling short. Recently, numerous news stories have detailed the ways teachers across the country have been disciplined for addressing issues of oppression and justice in their schools. This paper engages poststructural discourse analysis to consider data from a year-long study of recent graduates of a justice-oriented teacher education program during their first year teaching, examining the ways that stories of community backlash functioned to discipline early…

  • Authority and Carnival

    Rachel Ranschaert•ARTICLE•Educational Studies•2020•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 22

This qualitative, longitudinal study traces the development of preservice social studies teachers’ awareness of and reaction to the current climate of truth decay over the course of their initial certification program. By drawing a parallel between Bakhtin’s concept of the carnivalesque and the current online media landscape, this study found that teaching media literacy in a post-truth society can be complex and may indeed be asking teachers to …
