The arsenical copper smelting tradition of the Vera Basin (Southeast Iberia)
The early chronology, important archaeological settlements, and extensive archaeometallurgical remains make the Vera Basin in Southeast Iberia a fundamental area to understand the development of metallurgy. Here we present the analyses of a set of technical ceramics, slag and copper ores from Santa Bárbara (Huércal-Overa, Spain) and Zájara (Cuevas del Almanzora, Spain) Chalcolithic sites (3100-2250 cal. BC) using pXRF, OM, SEMEDS, and XRD. Techno…
Manufacturing and decorating cardial pottery
Traditional research approaches on pottery production based on typological and morphometric classifications have changed in favour of new lines of research. One of them is based on the study of the technological equipment used in ceramic manufacturing processes. For example, ethnographic evidence shows the use of shell tools as technological equipment in different phases of ceramic production. In this study, the methodology of use-wear analysis h…
A traceological and quantitative assessment of the function of the bone bi-pointed tools from the Late Neolithic of the Cueva del Toro (Antequera, Malaga)
Integrative approaches to the study of animal management practices during the Neolithic of South Iberian Peninsula
The introduction and adoption of livestock played a pivotal role in shaping subsistence strategies of populations in the southern Iberian Peninsula during the Neolithic. However, there is lack of information regarding animal management strategies, such as grazing areas and changes in foddering strategies, and their correlation with the environmental characteristics, type of site and use of the settlement. The study of feeding strategies of domest…
Manufacturing traces and pot-forming processes during the Early Neolithic at Cueva de El Toro (Málaga, Spain, 5280–4780 BCE)
This paper reports the results of forming processes used in pottery manufacture at La Cueva de El Toro (Málaga, Spain) during the Early Neolithic (5280–4780 cal. BCE). La Cueva de El Toro is one of the most important sites of reference on the southern Iberian Peninsula for providing extensive and systematised data on early farming practices. The identification of manufacturing traces on pottery has enabled the assessment of the variability of for…
New Insights into the Radiocarbon Chronology of Iberian Megalithic Societies
In 2012, the authors undertook a radiocarbon dating programme to explore the chronology of southern Iberian megalithic societies. Thirty new radiocarbon dates were obtained for two tholos -type tombs, Loma de Belmonte and Loma del Campo 2, and analysed within a Bayesian framework. Results are discussed in the context of the prehistoric societies of the region and four main conclusions were reached: i) in both tombs, mortuary activity started in t…
Aggressive or funerary cannibalism? Skull‐cup and human bone manipulation in Cueva de El Toro (Early Neolithic, southern Iberia)
Evidence from Cueva de El Toro suggests that cannibalism was conducted in the domestic sphere, likely following ritualized practices where the skull-cup could have played a part. Interpretation of this evidence suggests two hypotheses: (a) aggressive cannibalism relates to extreme inter-group violence; and (b) funerary cannibalism is a facet of multi-stage burial practices. Similar evidence has been found in other Neolithic sites of this region a…

Radiometric dates and micromorphological evidence for synchronous domestic activity and sheep penning in a Neolithic cave
The Neolithic in Almeria
The valley of Almanzora River and Vera Basin (Almeria) shows an intense dynamics of occupation in Prehistory; particulalry between the Early Neolithic and the Late Bronze Age. Several factors, such as recurrent associations betwen diverse productions - including the presence of cardial-impresed in Cabacicos Negros (Vera) - and the distinctive characteristics of the type of accupation, indicate that the oldest phase of occupation took place during…
