Analysis of a Quartz-Dominant Lithic Assemblage in Western Georgia, USA
Over 500 lithic artifacts have been recovered from 9TP864, a precontact multicomponent site in Troup County, Georgia, spanning from the Paleoindian to Late Woodland periods. These artifacts were collected by a private landowner via controlled surface collection and limited shovel testing between 1977 and 2021. Artifacts include projectile points, drills, scrapers, and debitage. Research focused on an analysis of lithic manufacturing and material …
The redistribution of housing wealth caused by rent control
This paper studies the effects of rent control on the housing wealth of renters, landlords, and homeowners. Following the passage of rent control in St. Paul, Minnesota in 2021, average property values fell by 4.0% to 5.5%. Leveraging parcel-level data, we show that in the aggregate, renters gained and landlords lost, though upper-income renters gained more than lower-income renters, while small landlords lost the same as large landlords. Owner-o…
Caches, Memory, and Ritual at the Maya City of Cival
This article examines Middle and Late Preclassic period ritual activity and caches discovered in the Central E Group complex at the ancient Maya site of Cival, which is located in northeastern Peten, Guatemala. It focuses on a series of excavations conducted in 2013 and 2014 at Structure 9, the E Group's western radial pyramid and uses theories of social memory and sacred place to provide insight into the recently discovered caches, termination r…

Do Common Stocks Have Perfect Substitutes? Product Market Competition and the Elasticity of Demand for Stocks
Though common stocks are one of the most important assets in an economy, little is known about their demand curves. I estimate demand curves for 144 NYSE stocks using a unique data set of all orders, including off-equilibrium orders, during three months in 1990 and 1991. Connecting asset pricing with industrial organization, I find that stocks of firms in less competitive industries are more elastic because they have closer substitutes than stock…
The Changing of the Boards
In 2003, a new law required that 40% of Norwegian firms' directors be women—at the time only 9% of directors were women. We use the prequota cross-sectional variation in female board representation to instrument for exogenous changes to corporate boards following the quota. We find that the constraint imposed by the quota caused a significant drop in the stock price at the announcement of the law and a large decline in Tobin's Q over the followin…
