  • Fostering forest restoration

    W De Jong•ARTICLE•The International Forestry Review•2025

  • Dissecting forest transition

Open Access•Johan De Jong, Lourens Poorter et al.•ARTICLE•Land Use Policy•2025•Referencias: 117

Forest Transition (FT) is a theoretical framework for understanding tree cover changes but often overlooks differences within countries, across forest types (e.g., second-growth forests, tree plantations replacing natural forests), regions, and climates. We quantified tropical tree cover dynamics across eight regions in four tropical countries, examining how these patterns relate to FT and how they vary between climates and forest types. Each cou…

  • Socio-Economic and Ecological Factors Influencing Rulemaking for Community-Based Forest Management

Open Access•Marieke Van Der Zon, Johan De Jong et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of the…•2025•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 6

There is broad consensus that policymakers must work with indigenous peoples and local communities (IPLCs) to protect biodiversity and carbon stocks in the remaining tropical forests. However, the success of community forest management initiatives around the world has been mixed. Collaboration between policymakers and IPLCs requires a nuanced understanding of the socio-economic and cultural realities, motivations, and long-term conservation needs…

  • Cedars of the North Mountains

W De Jong, Andrea Flores Urushima et al.•ARTICLE•The International Forestry Review•2022

The region north of Kyoto is referred to as Kitayama, which literally translates as North Mountains. The region is the location of Cryptomeria japonica , Japanese cedar or sugi , production in Japan. Cedar logs grown there are used as pillars in the construction of buildings in a typical Japanese minimalist style, but also traditional rooms included in modern houses. Cedar was planted widely in Japan following World War II not only to rebuild the…

  • Recognizing Indigenous and Traditional Peoples and their identity, culture, rights, and governance of forestlands

Open Access•Stephen Wyatt, Janette Bulkan et al.•ARTICLE•The International Forestry Review•2022

This Special Issue aims to provide an overview of the diversity of international research on the multiple ways in which Indigenous and Traditional peoples (ITP) are engaged in occupying and governing forest landscapes, consistent with their rights, values, knowledge and customs. This Introduction begins by reviewing our evolving understanding of two key questions: what rights are held by ITP; and how "Indigenous" and "Traditional" are actually de…

  • Thriving in turbulent times

    Open Access•Tina N Bauer, Tina Bauer et al.•ARTICLE•Land Use Policy•2022•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 59

Climate change affects ecosystems and the well-being of rural households relying on ecosystem services for their livelihoods. The ability to withstand the adverse effects of climate change depends on their livelihood resilience. The relationship between natural resource dependence and livelihood resilience of Indigenous forest households in the Amazon region is still poorly understood. We used a case study approach to identify factors contributin…

  • Forest frontiers out of control

Open Access•Benno Pokorny, Pablo Pacheco et al.•ARTICLE•AMBIO•2021•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 113

With the Brazilian military governments of the 1960s, systematic economic development of the Amazon began. Social and environmental concerns have entered Amazonian discourses and policies only since the 1990s. Since then, reports of threats to forests and indigenous people have alternated with reports of socio-economic progress and environmental achievements. These contradictions often arise from limited thematic, sectoral, temporal, or spatial p…

  • Frontiers of protected areas versus forest exploitation

    Open Access•Per Angelstam, Andra-Cosmina Albulescu et al.•ARTICLE•AMBIO•2021•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 77

Exploitation of natural forests forms expanding frontiers. Simultaneously, protected area frontiers aim at maintaining functional habitat networks. To assess net effects of these frontiers, we examined 16 case study areas on five continents. We (1) mapped protected area instruments, (2) assessed their effectiveness, (3) mapped policy implementation tools, and (4) effects on protected areas originating from their surroundings. Results are given as…

It does so by analyzing input and output legitimacy of the two certification standards at the global level, and at national and local levels in Peru. The fin…

This article is concerned with the way ethnic and racial categories are achieved and sustained in daily talk. We argue against the notion of social categories as immanent cognitive structures whose existence and significance can be taken for granted. It is emphasized that categories are constructed in discourse. The construction and representation of ethnic categories are studied by analysing discussions held by some ethnically Dutch inhabitants …

    Kristen Evans, W De Jong et al.•ARTICLE•Society & Natural Resources•2010•Citada por: 11•Referencias: 1

Forest devolution and government decentralization have increased community control over forests. Remoteness, low literacy, and lack of formal planning experience often leave forest communities unprepared for their new responsibilities. Forest communities need to develop skills that allow them to establish goals and make decisions transparently and democratically and to negotiate effectively with other local actors if they are to become more proac…
