Theory of ecology of pressures as a tool for classifying language shift in bilingual communities
This article examines the stage of language shift in Tlaxco (Santiago Tlaxco), a bilingual Nahuatl-Spanish-speaking community in Puebla, Mexico. We employ the theory of ecology of pressure framework to identify and analyze the pressures that favor or deter language maintenance of Nahuatl and categorize the level of language shift. Family language policy in Indigenous and bilingual communities
This paper reports on the family language policy (FLP) of three families in a Nahuatl community in Mexico. It investigates the role of (i) parental experiences, beliefs, attitudes and expectations, (ii) child practices, and (iii) broader societal attitudes in shaping these policies. Drawing on survey and interview data, the study points to a tension between generally positive attitudes towards Nahuatl and reported language practices in the home. …
Bilingual youth’s language choices and attitudes towards Nahuatl in Santiago Tlaxco, Mexico
The younger generations are considered one of the principal agents in the maintenance or shift of any language. Scales or measurements of vitality propose various factors to assess the degree of endangerment of a language. This paper performs a comparative analysis of two translations of Flora Tristan’s travelogue to Peru, Pérégrinations d’une paria (1838), namely Jean Hawkes’ English translation, Peregrinations of a Pariah and Emilia Romero’s Spanish version, Peregrinaciones de una paria .
