This article analyses London's street markets in the years between 1850 and 1939. It shows how this was a period of significant growth for street markets, with both steeply increasing numbers of markets and a steady increase in the number of stalls overall. The Interpretation of Surface
This article examines the surface qualities of textile objects in the 1880 to 1939 period, analyzing representations and descriptions of both highly finished and maintained textile surfaces, and degraded and ill-maintained garments. It is argued that the finishing techniques applied in manufacture were carefully replicated in domestic processes, and that qualities of surface and finish in textiles were important both materially and symbolically i…

This article examines the material culture of British working‐class homes in the late Victorian and Edwardian period, paying particular attention to the issue of cleanliness. Using evidence from social investigations and autobiographies, it asks how cleanliness, both as a material practice and as an idea, was deployed within the working‐class home and its spatial arrangements.
