The impact of critical incidents, work stress, and organizational support on PTSD symptoms among law enforcement officers
Law enforcement officers regularly encounter critical incidents, which can result in the development of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms. Multiple factors could impact the association between critical incidents and PTSD, particularly work environment stress (WES) and perceived organizational support (POS). We hypothesized that WES would moderate the association between critical incident frequency and PTSD symptoms, with POS interacti…
Accurate Identification and Prosocial Behaviors Towards Human Trafficking Victims Among Psychology Students
As human trafficking victims often experience psychological and medical concerns, healthcare systems have been identified as a potential point of identification and intervention for this population. Unfortunately, there remain low rates of victim identification within healthcare, with one explanation being biases healthcare providers may hold about victims. Often, biases are ingrained and longstanding, leading to an under-identification of victim…
Increasing support for alternatives to incarceration for drug use
The National Institute of Drug Addiction has promoted the Brain Disease Model of Addiction (BDMA) for several decades, believing it will have a positive impact on drug-related social policies. Per research, neither understanding nor accepting the BDMA positively influences social behavior and decision making related to decreased stigma or increased support for treatment and funding for substance use disorders. An alternative model, the Malleabili…
Criminal Justice Students’ Perceptions of Human Trafficking Victims
The current study used a vignette study design to determine if criminal justice students hold biases about human trafficking victims based on demographic variables (i.e. age, gender, immigrant status) and forms of trafficking (i.e. sex and labor trafficking). For this study, 190 criminal justice students were recruited. Due to stereotypes and biased views of who victims are (formed largely by biased media coverage), we hypothesized that criminal …
Treatment considerations for foreign-born victims of human trafficking
Foreign-born individuals immigrating to or residing in the United States are especially vulnerable to exploitation by traffickers. Being trafficked elevates the risk for a variety of physical and mental health problems; thus, victims will often come into contact with health professionals. Because there is a dearth of literature concerning the treatment of human trafficking victims, and especially foreign-born victims, we set out to describe the p…
The impact of microaggressions on Black college students’ worry about their future employment
Perceived social support offers some protection against the exposure of racial microaggressions, although high-achieving Black college students (the most vulnerable to potential isolation and academic pressure) may not benefit from overall social support. The Influence of Race-Related Stress on Eating Pathology
The current study aimed to advance the eating pathology literature through investigating the association between a salient stressor for Black American women (race-related stress) and eating pathology, while also examining the potential mediating role of depressive symptoms on this association. In addition, the study aimed to examine the potential protective role of cultural worldview in this model. A community sample of 119 Black women between th…
African American emerging adults’ experiences with racial discrimination and drinking habits
African Americans who experience a high degree of perceived stress in response to experiences with racial discrimination may be at greater risk for problem drinking than their peers with less perceived stress. These findings highlight the need for novel intervention efforts aimed at mitigating the effects of stress and racial discrimination on health outcomes. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2018 APA, all rights reserved
Race-related stress and hopelessness in community-based African American adults
Individual and collective morale for one's racial group (via self-esteem social support) may be especially valuable for African Americans who face racial discrimination. Findings highlight the importance of culturally relevant factors that may ameliorate the effects of race-related stress. (PsycINFO Database Record
Comparison of Helplessness and Hopelessness as Sources of Cognitive Vulnerability Among Black and White College Students
The Cognitive Style Questionnaire (CSQ), an expansion of the Attributional Style Questionnaire (ASQ), was created as an enhanced measure of cognitive vulnerability to depression using a hopelessness theory framework. However, the CSQ's development emphasized facets of cognitive vulnerability consistent with a Eurocentric worldview. Consequently, the CSQ may inadvertently degrade rather than enhance assessment of cognitive vulnerability to depress…
Impulsivity and Reasons for Living Among African American Youth
This study aims to explore the impact of specific facets of impulsivity as measured by the UPPS Impulsive Behavior Scale (UPPS), as well as reasons for living in predicting suicidal ideation among African American college-aged students. The incremental validity of each facet of the UPPS interacting with reasons for living, a construct meant to buffer against risk for suicide, was explored in a sample of African American students (N = 130; ages 18…
Socioeconomic Status and Symptoms of Depression and Anxiety in African American College Students
Factors such as socioeconomic status (SES) and hopelessness, a dimension of cognitive vulnerability, have been associated with the onset of depression and anxiety pathology in primarily European American study samples. The purpose of this brief article was to examine a main effect of SES and mediating effect of hopelessness in relation to acute symptoms of depression and anxiety in African American college students. Vulnerability-stress theories …
