Kizomba beyond Angolan-ness and Lusofonia
The partner dance kizomba became fashionable in the eighties in Portuguese-speaking Africa and its European diasporas. Its commodification in Portugal in the late nineties turned it into a global craze, supported by a linear story: Angola is the source of kizomba, and Lisbon, its international capital. This essay moves beyond the methodological nationalism and the post-imperial geographical concept, lusofonia, that supports this narrative. Examin…

Bodies That Cannot Listen
This is a brief reflection on the consequences of the commodification of dance cultures from the former colonised world and the ways they are consumed in Europe. Inspired from ten years of fieldwork, the ethnic structuring of postcolonial dance floors in European cities proves an empirical basis to start this line of thought. Instead of promoting respect and interest in the dance forms and the cultural contexts in which these dance forms develope…
African Nightclubs of Lisbon and Madrid as Spaces of Cultural Resistance
The main objective of this article involves describing how African nightclubs of Lisbon have become spaces for cultural resistance against certain representations of African-ness, taking Madrid as a contrasting case. Since the 1970s, the so-called African nightclubs of Lisbon have constituted spaces for gathering and nurturing a sense of community for immigrants from Portuguese-speaking Africa. Commonly regarded suspiciously by most Portuguese ci…

Kizomba Dance
This paper aims to analyze how the global contra-flow of a dance style — kizomba — generated an impact on the symbolic representation of a nation — Angola — nd the controversies this national branding involves. The kizomba couple dance style became popular in some Portuguese-speaking African cities and nightclubs in Lisbon in the 1980s. In the mid-1990s, the style underwent commodification in Portugal. In less than ten years, it went onto become …
Dancing with children in the field
In contexts where dancing proves a relevant daily practice, dancing with children may provide an extremely interesting strategic option for education ethnographers. Drawing from my empirical material, I describe how dancing was accidentally introduced as a role in the field (dance teacher) before later becoming an unexpectedly great ethnographic tool. Through a series of different breakdowns, I found this constituted the key to gaining better acc…

Ritual roles of "African nights" DJs in Lisbon
The objective of this paper is to explore the diverse roles performed by the DJs working at the so-called "African nights" of Lisbon. Based on a three-year ethnography, the reflection starts from a dialogue with the literature on Electronic Dance Music DJs for comparing both these cultures. The social encounters at these "African" parties are analysed as a contemporary secular ritual in which participants negotiate relevant categories of social b…

Confronted with the presence of children who migrate on their own from Morocco to Spain, policies have become oriented towards repatriation, which poses ethical and theoretical problems. Social intervention with these children is marked in many ways by the category of «unaccompanied Moroccan minors» imposed on them. This label (a) implies a series of contradictions between their status as «minors» and as «foreigners», which places us squarely in …
On the irrelevance of ethnicity in children's organization of their social world
When studying the ways of structuring social life in general, and the socialization processes of children in particular, ethnicity is often taken for granted as a basic axis along which people distribute themselves into groups. Most anthropological studies describe and classify agents in ethnic terms. This articles argue that ethnicity is not always a relevant principle of order in the social fields of children, at least in the ethnographic cases…
