  • Tracing individuality and hand preference in Upper Palaeolithic engraving

    Open Access•Jérôme Robitaille, Lisa-Elen Meyering et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2026•Referencias: 15

In the context of Palaeolithic archaeology, identifying traits of individual creators of prehistoric art remains a formidable challenge. This study introduces innovative traceological methods employed to analyze engraved stone plaquettes from the 15,800-year-old Late Upper Palaeolithic site of Gönnersdorf, Germany. Utilizing advanced techniques such as confocal microscopy, alongside manual and robotic experimentation, we investigate the hand pref…

  • Archaeometric Approaches to Red Ochre Exploitation in Neolithic Greece

Open Access•Vasilios Melfos, Anna Stroulia et al.•ARTICLE•Advances in Archaeomaterials•2025

This paper approaches Greek Neolithic red ochres through three different archaeometric lenses. A macro lens zooms in on the site of Kremasti-Kilada, in the Kitrini Limni Basin, and examines its ochre nodules, their provenance, the ways they were processed, as well as the applications of the resulting colorant. A mid-range lens places the Kremasti materials within a regional framework by examining specimens uncovered at several neighboring sites i…

  • Grinding and Abrading Activities in the Earlier Neolithic of Northern Greece

Open Access•Anna Stroulia, Jérôme Robitaille et al.•ARTICLE•Documenta Praehistorica•2022

Despite their widespread presence and potential to shed light on various aspects of prehistoric life, for a long time Neolithic macrolithics attracted little scholarly attention. The situation, however, is rapidly changing as more and more assemblages are being studied and published systematically. The study of the grinding and abrading tools from the earlier Neolithic site of Pontokomi-Souloukia in northern Greece is part of this recent trend, a…

  • Salt, Sand, and Saddles

Anna Stroulia, Laure Dubreuil et al.•ARTICLE•Ethnoarchaeology•2017

The field of macrolithic use-wear analysis has developed dramatically in recent years, but the morphological evolution of surfaces resulting from use has not received much attention. To a large extent, this neglect is due to the substantial amount of time that experiments exploring this aspect would require. This article presents a time-saving experimental program that involves rock salt and sand, used in combination with archaeological data, eth…

  • The ground stone industry of the Mursi of Maki, Ethiopia

    Open Access•Jérôme Robitaille•ARTICLE•Journal of Lithic Studies•2016

New ethnoarchaeological evidence is currently contributing to a better understanding of the techniques and functions related to the use of stone tools for grinding and milling. This paper explores how the Mursi people in Maki, Ethiopia use handstones in different ways and how they also use different types of handstones for preparation of a variety of foods. Rather than a pestle and mortar, the Mursi have technically adjusted their tools (querns a…
