  • Physical activity and health-related quality of life in children and adolescents

    Arwen M Marker, Ric G Steele et al.•ARTICLE•Health Psychology•2018

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to quantify the effect of physical activity (in both descriptive and intervention studies) on health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in children and adolescents from both healthy and chronic illness populations. • The Contribution of Ethnic Minority Status to Adaptive Style

    Open Access•R Enrique Varela, Ric G Steele et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Cross-Cultural…•2007•Referencias: 13

Ethnic minority status and health minority status (i.e., presence of illness) may facilitate repressive adaptive style (RAS) in an additive fashion, and a “double stigma” hypothesis has been proposed to explain this additive effect. The authors compare RAS in European American, Mexican American, and Mexican children and examine the association of RAS to the traditional values of simpatia and collectivism. Results do not confirm the hypothesis tha…

  • Repressive Adaptive Style in Children With Chronic Illness

Sean Phipps, Ric G Steele et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•2002

OBJECTIVE: The primary objectives of this study were 1) To assess whether previously reported findings of high levels of repressive adaptation in children with cancer are unique to the cancer population or are generally characteristic of children with serious chronic illness and 2) to assess the utility of including a new measure of anger expression in the adaptive style measurement paradigm. METHODS: Measures of defensiveness, trait anxiety, and…

  • Adherence to antiretroviral therapy among HIV-positive children

    Ric G Steele, B Anderson et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS Care•2001

This study examined the association between two components of the Health Belief Model (perceived vulnerability and barriers) and adherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART) among children who are HIV-infected. The parents/caregivers of 30 children (mean age = 5.21, SD = 3.18) who were HIV-infected and who were on active ART were surveyed to assess current methods of adherence assessment and educational efforts within the institution. All participan…

  • Discrepancy between Mother and Child Perceptions of Their Relationship

  • Coping strategies and behavior problems of urban African-American children

Ric G Steele, Rex Forehand et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Orthopsychiatry•1999

The development and correlates of 82 inner-city African-American children's coping strategies were examined across three years. Results indicated no change in the mean frequency of self-reported coping strategies over the three years, and a significant correlation of emotion-focused strategies with increased self- and mother-reported behavior problems. Child-reported externalizing problems (and, to a lesser degree, internalizing problems) predict…

  • The role of family conflict and marital conflict in adolescent functioning

    Open Access•Corinne F David, Corinne David et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Family Violence•1996•Citada por: 6•Referencias: 1

  • Predicting alcohol and drug use in early adulthood

Ric G Steele, Rex Forehand et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Orthopsychiatry•1995

Unique and interactive internalizing and externalizing behavior problems in adolescence were examined in relationship to drug and alcohol use in young adulthood. Results indicated that higher externalizing scores in adolescence predicted more alcohol use in young adulthood for both males and females and also predicted more marijuana and hard drug use for males. Lower internalizing scores were found to predict more marijuana and hard drug use in y…
