This article tries to explain how an agrarian social system based on serfdom survived in Bolivia until 1952, and analyses the system of social control which maintained it and which was based on manorial estates and contrived cultural isolation. Most of ‘Indian’ culture and social organisation is seen as a secretion of the colonial labour system, maintained through the Republican period.
