  • Video games, emotion, and emotion regulation

    Scott H Hemenover, Nicholas David Bowman•ARTICLE•Annals of the International…•2018•Citada por: 5•Referencias: 22

Recent years have seen important advances in the study of video games, with many scholars examining how video games impact emotional experiences of players. While this research borrows heavily from traditional media effects paradigms, it has proceeded without effectively integrating developments in emotion and emotion regulation. Therefore, this paper first reviews the nature of emotion and emotion regulation, and then reviews the extant video ga…

  • Accuracy and generalizability in summaries of affect regulation strategies

    Adam A Augustine, Scott H Hemenover•ARTICLE•Psychological Bulletin•2013

In their examination of the effectiveness of affect regulation strategies, Webb, Miles, and Sheeran (2012) offered the results of a broad meta-analysis of studies on regulatory interventions. Their analysis provides an alternative to our earlier, more focused meta-analysis of the affect regulation literature (Augustine & Hemenover, 2009). Unfortunately, there are a number of errors and omissions in this new meta-analysis that could lead to miscon…

  • Individual differences in negative affect repair

Scott H Hemenover, Adam A Augustine et al.•ARTICLE•Emotion•2008

The extant literature implicates affect repair ability as one source of individual differences in negative affect. Emerging from this literature are three regulatory traits that should predict repair ability (negative mood regulation expectancies, monitoring, labeling), yet no experimental examination of this possibility exists. Two studies explored this issue. Participants (Ns=305, 146) watched negative affect-inducing videos and completed a rep…

  • Is dispositional emotional intelligence synonymous with personality

    Tirza Shulman, Scott H Hemenover•ARTICLE•Self and Identity•2006

To examine the utility of dispositional models of emotional intelligence (EI), two studies (Ns = 263, 116) examined whether dispositional EI predicted psychological health independent of personality. Participants completed measures of three EI dispositions (perception, understanding, regulation), Big-Five traits, psychological well-being and emotional distress. In Study 2 participants completed the health scales a second time three months later. …

  • Individual differences in rate of affect change

    Scott H Hemenover•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality and Social…•2003•Citada por: 8•Referencias: 39

Three studies explored individual differences in rate of affect change. Participants watched affect-inducing videos and reported their affect twice in 20 min. Individual differences in rate of affect change emerged independently of initial affect intensity and stress appraisals, revealing 2 affect-change profiles. Positive affect augmenters (extraverts, emotionally stable participants, and those with high negative mood regulation expectancies) sh…

  • What Do We Assess when We Assess a Big 5 Trait? A Content Analysis of the Affective, Behavioral, and Cognitive Processes Represented in Big 5 Personality Inventories

Open Access•Lisa M Pytlik Zillig, Scott H Hemenover et al.•ARTICLE•Personality and Social Psychology…•2002

What are personality traits? Are all “broad” traits equally broad in the constructs they encompass and in the pervasiveness of their effects? Or are some traits more or less affective, behavioral, or cognitive in nature? The present study examined these issues as they applied to the Big 5 traits of Neuroticism, Extraversion, Openness, Agreeableness, and Conscientiousness. Expert and novice raters judged the extent to which items from four popular…
