  • Making Progress in Age Stereotype Research

    Open Access•Kevin R Murphy, Angelo S Denisi et al.•ARTICLE•Work Aging and Retirement•2022•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 8

Murphy and DeNisi’s review suggested that the links between age and personnel decisions in organizations were generally weak and inconsistent and, on this basis, suggested that the effects of age stereotypes on these decisions might not be large. Fourteen papers commented on the evidence and arguments offered by Murphy and DeNisi. In our response, we comment on three broad themes running though this set of papers. First, several papers challenged…

  • Do Age Stereotypes Predict Personnel Decisions? The State of the Evidence

    Open Access•Kevin R Murphy, Angelo S Denisi et al.•ARTICLE•Work Aging and Retirement•2021•Citada por: 18•Referencias: 11

It is widely believed that older workers are likely to fare badly in recruitment and hiring, promotion, pay, training opportunities, layoffs, and termination (Garstka et al., 2005; Kita, 2019), and that negative stereotypes of older workers contribute significantly to these outcomes (Finkelstein et al., 2012; Ng & Feldman, 2012; Posthuma & Campion, 2009; Posthuma et al., 2012; Toomey & Rudolph, 2015; von Hippel et al., 2019; Weiss & Perry, 2020).…

We review 100 years of research on performance appraisal and performance management, highlighting the articles published in JAP, but including significant work from other journals as well. We discuss trends in eight substantive areas: (1) scale formats, (2) criteria for evaluating ratings, (3) training, (4) reactions to appraisal, (5) purpose of rating, (6) rating sources, (7) demographic differences in ratings, and (8) cognitive processes, and d…

  • The Legal Context of the Management of Human Resources

    Kevin R Murphy•ARTICLE•Annual Review of Organizational…•2017

Laws designed to reduce employment discrimination and to regulate labor standards have a strong impact on the management of human resources in organizations. This article examines in detail the development and enforcement of antidiscrimination laws in the United States; it also considers comparable laws and policies in the European Union (EU). A significant body of research focuses on the standards that are used to determine whether particular po…

  • Psychological Test

    Open Access•Kevin R Murphy•CHAPTER•Wiley Encyclopedia of Management•2015

A psychological test is a sample of behavior obtained under standardized conditions, and employs specific scoring rules to obtain quantitative information from those behaviors about the attribute(s) the test is designed to measure (Murphy and Davidshofer, 1994).

  • Reconsidering the Use of Personality Tests in Personnel Selection Contexts

    Open Access•Frederick P Morgeson, Michael A Campion et al.•ARTICLE•Personnel Psychology•2007

Although long thought to be unrelated to job performance, research in the early 1990s provided evidence that personality can predict job performance. Accompanying this research was a resurgence of interest in the use of personality tests in high‐stakes selection environments. Yet there are numerous potential problems associated with the current operational use of personality. As such, 5 former journal editors from Personnel Psychology and the Jou…

  • Person- and context-oriented perceptual age measures

    Open Access•Jeanette N Cleveland, Lynn M Shore et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Organizational Behavior•1997•Referencias: 1

Cleveland and Shore (1992) suggested that four perceptual age measures could be grouped into person-oriented and context-oriented factors. This study examined longitudinal data from their same sample, and tested three propositions related to the distinctiveness and usefulness of the age measures. Confirmatory factor analyses showed that the factor structure proposed by Cleveland and Shore was invariant over time, and that new multi-item scales me…

  • Parents of children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder

    Kevin R Murphy, Russell A Barkley•ARTICLE•American Journal of Orthopsychiatry•1996

Biological parents of ADHD children were compared with parents of nonclinical children on measures of psychological impairment and attentional performance. Parents of children with severe ADHD demonstrated greater impairment in social and psychological functioning. However, no significant differences were found on laboratory measures of sustained attention, memory, cognitive flexibility, encoding, or impulsivity. The possibility that parental adj…

  • Development of a Peer-Report Measure of Social Transactions Used by Early Adolescents to Infer Liking

Open Access•Kevin R Murphy, Kevin Murphy et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Early Adolescence•1994•Referencias: 6

The purpose of this study was to develop a peer-report measure of social transactions used to infer liking by peers. Sixty-five early adolescents were interviewed concerning the behavioral basis of their impressions of who liked or disliked them in their class. Twenty-two behavioral cues for liking between children were then tentatively identified. To confirm the communicative potential of these behaviors, another sample of 260 Grade 5 students r…

  • Coaching Socially Rejected Early Adolescents Regarding Behaviors Used by Peers to Infer Liking

Open Access•Kevin R Murphy, Kevin Murphy et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Early Adolescence•1994•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 1

In an experimental manipulation, 24 socially rejected children, two from each of 12 different Grade 5 classes, were coached on the importance of displaying behaviors known to be used by peers in making inferences of liking. These children were then encouraged to communicate these behaviors toward selected friendship targets within their own classroom groups. Significant treatment-related improvements were found in these friendships, and targets r…

  • Children's Friendships

Open Access•Barry H Schneider, Judith Wiener et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Social and Personal…•1994•Citada por: 6•Referencias: 37

Differences and similarities between the constructs of friendship and global peer acceptance in childhood are considered. Research to date has identified the features of children's friendships. Children appear to be capable of forming stable, close friendships at younger ages than was once thought. Gender differences in children's friendships have received considerable attention, but other types of individual difference have not been studied exte…

  • Development and Validation of a Measure of Attitudes toward Employee Drug Testing

    Open Access•Kevin R Murphy, George C Thornton•ARTICLE•Educational and Psychological…•1992

Employee drug testing, although widespread, is still controversial. In this study, a 19-item scale measuring attitudes toward employee drug testing, based on responses to actual drug testing policies and practices, was developed. The obtained coefficient alpha for this scale was .90. Results of a maximum-likelihood confirmatory factor analysis indicate a four-factor structure (one general and three content-oriented factors). Evidence of criterion…

    Kevin R Murphy•ARTICLE•Multivariate Behavioral Research•1982

When either regression models or subjectively weighted models are used as aids in making placement decisions, the discriminant validity of these models is of interest. When all predictor information is used in all decisions, models which assign equal weights cannot simultaneously show high levels of predictive accuracy and discriminant validity; in some settings, both regression models and subjectively weighted models may. The discriminant validi…

  • Professional Socialization and Attitudes Toward Collective Bargaining

    Open Access•Robert N Stern, Kevin R Murphy•ARTICLE•Sociology of Work and Occupations•1980

This study examines the basis of hostility toward collective bargaining by professionals as attitudes develop during professional training. Comparisons are made among law students in different class years within a school. Data on the relationship between background, motivation to enter law, careerplans, stage of legal training, and attitudes toward bargaining show that hostility toward professional collective bargaining increases with training.
