  • Navigating Authority: Role Responses and Correctional Officer Victimization

    Open Access•Melinda Tasca, Misty C Duke et al.•ARTICLE•Crime & Delinquency•2026

Correctional officers (COs) face high rates of workplace violence compared to other professions. Yet, research remains limited about how COs’ responses to working in unpredictable carceral environments relate to victimization. Using self-report data from COs working in male facilities in a Southern state prison system ( N = 253), we examine the relationship between role responses and threats and physical assaults. Results showed that depersonaliz…

  • Communicating uncertainty in intelligence forecasts using verbal expressions of probability and confidence

    Misty C Duke•ARTICLE•Intelligence & National Security•2025

The National Intelligence Council provides guidelines for how to interpret expressions of uncertainty in analytic reports, including verbal expressions of both probability (e.g. ‘likely’ or ‘unlikely’) and confidence (i.e. ‘low’, ‘moderate’, and ‘high’). This study examined how people interpret intelligence forecasts made with these expressions. 1315 participants provided quantitative and qualitative interpretations of forecasts in two studies.. …

  • Improving intelligence analysis and education in the US with stronger foundations in statistical literacy

Misty C Duke, Diana Bolsinger et al.•ARTICLE•Intelligence & National Security•2025

This article argues that coursework in statistical literacy can improve the practice of intelligence analysis in the US. The article describes the gaps in current intelligence education pertaining to statistically literacy, explains how statistical literacy relates to the tasks of intelligence analysis, and offers a series of recommendations for statistical literacy courses specifically designed for future intelligence practitioners. The incorpor…

  • Probability and confidence: How to improve communication of uncertainty about uncertainty in intelligence analysis

    Open Access•Misty C Duke•ARTICLE•Journal of Behavioral Decision…•2023•Referencias: 5

Intelligence agencies communicate uncertainty to decision‐makers through verbal probability phrases that correspond to numerical ranges (i.e., probability lexicons) and ordinal levels of confidence. However, decision‐makers may misinterpret the relationship between these concepts and form inappropriate interpretations of intelligence analysts' uncertainty. In two experiments, four ways of conveying second‐order probability to decision‐makers were…

  • A second look at the validity of widely used Rorschach indices: Comment on Mihura, Meyer, Dumitrascu, and Bombel (2013)

    James M Wood, Howard N Garb et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Bulletin•2015

We comment on the meta-analysis by Mihura, Meyer, Dumitrascu, and Bombel (2013), which examined the validity of scores in Exner's Comprehensive System (CS) for the Rorschach. First, we agree there is compelling evidence that 4 categories of cognitive scores-the "Rorschach cognitive quartet"-are related to cognitive ability/impairment and thought disorder. We now feel comfortable endorsing the use of these scores in some applied and research setti…
