  • Using Dynamic Causal Bayesian Networks to Assess the Role of Patient-Centered Care and Individual-Level Barriers on Viral Suppression Changes Among a Cohort of People with HIV

Open Access•Mary Jo Trepka, Samantha Gonzales et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS and Behavior•2026

To assess the impact of changes in barriers to HIV viral suppression and the moderating role of patient-provider relationships, we conducted a retrospective cohort study using dynamic causal Bayesian network analyses on the first two available needs assessments between May 2020 and December 2022 for clients of the Miami-Dade County Ryan White Program (RWP) Part A Program. A cohort of 1539 individuals was formed using data from the RWP medical cas…

We conducted a cross-sectional study to examine the associations between items of the patient-provider relationship measures and antiretroviral therapy (ART) adherence and viral suppression within each of three ethnic groups of women with HIV (WHIV) - Hispanic, Haitian, and African American - using data from 542 WHIV enrolled in the Miami-Dade County Ryan White Program. Univariate and multivariable logistic regression models were applied for each…

    Melissa Ward‐Peterson, Sofia B Fernandez et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS Care•2023

This exploratory study examined sex differences in psychosocial and demographic factors associated with sustained HIV viral suppression (SVS). The study population included 6,489 Miami-Dade Ryan White Program (RWP) clients receiving services during 2017; administrative data was analyzed. SVS was defined as having all viral load tests during 2017 below 200 copies/ml. Multilevel logistic regression models accounted for clustering by medical case ma…

The purpose of this study was to assess the prevalence of chlamydia or gonorrhea and factors associated with the diagnoses among people with HIV (PHIV) in the Ryan White Program Part A (RWP) in Miami-Dade County, Florida. We used 2017 calendar year data to identify factors associated with a chlamydia or gonorrhea diagnoses using logistic regression. About 50% of the 7110 PHIV who were ≥18 years old in active Ryan White care in 2017 reported being…

  • Multilevel influences of women’s empowerment and economic resources on risky sexual behaviour among young women in Zomba district, Malawi

Open Access•Melissa Ward‐Peterson, Kristopher Fennie et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Biosocial Science•2021

Gender disparities are pronounced in Zomba district, Malawi. Among women aged 15–49 years, HIV prevalence is 16.8%, compared with 9.3% among men of the same age. Complex structural factors are associated with risky sexual behaviour leading to HIV infection. This study’s objective was to explore associations between multilevel measures of economic resources and women’s empowerment with risky sexual behaviour among young women in Zomba. Four measur…

Rahel Dawit, Diana M Sheehan et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS Care•2021

The study objective was to classify women with newly diagnosed HIV into patterns of retention in care (≥2 HIV care visits ≥3 months apart) and viral suppression over time and identify factors associated with class membership. Florida HIV/AIDS surveillance data were used to conduct Latent Class Analysis to classify women into patterns, and multinomial regression was used to compare the prevalence of class membership by demographic and clinical fac…

  • Development and Validation of Vulnerable and Enabling Indices for HIV Viral Suppression among People with HIV Enrolled in the Ryan White Program

Open Access•Merhawi T Gebrezgi, Mary Jo Trepka et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

General mental health, drug use, and socioeconomic indices using administrative data showed acceptable reliability, validity, and utility for non-viral suppression in an overall PLWH population and in gender- and racial/ethnic-stratified populations. These general indices may be used with similar validity and utility across gender and racial/ethnic diverse populations

  • Sustained HIV viral suppression among men who have sex with men in the Miami-Dade County Ryan White Program

Open Access•Diana M Sheehan, Rahel Dawit et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2020

Despite access to treatment, age and racial disparities in sustained viral suppression exist among MSM living with HIV. Addressing substance use, mental health, and social services' needs may improve the ability of MSM to sustain viral suppression long-term. Furthermore, physician characteristics may be associated with HIV outcomes and should be explored further

We used records from Hispanics/Latinos (2007–2016) who were reported to the Florida HIV/AIDS surveillance system. We compared trends in birth country/region and age by year using a two-sided Cochran–Armitage Trend Test. Of 12,427 new diagnoses, 85.9% were among men. Of men, 79.5% were MSM. The proportion attr…

    A J Durante, Amanda Durante et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS Care•2003

Collection of antiretroviral medication adherence data in the homes of HIV-infected people may have methodological advantages that can improve data quality. However, the feasibility of this approach has not been established. In addition, data on adherence, and its predictors, among HIV-infected women have been limited. Sixty-three HIV-positive women who were prescribed at least one antiretroviral drug in the last month were interviewed in their h…
