  • “Leave Britney alone!”

Hailey Scherer, Salena Diaz et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Social Psychology•2022

The present study examined the relationship between parasocial relationships (PSRs; one-sided relationships with media figures), PSR characteristics, and empathy. We also examined whether people are biased toward those with PSRs, and whether people higher in empathy are less biased. Participants completed a survey that assessed whether they a) had a PSR, b) their satisfaction with, commitment to, and investment in the PSR, c) their degree of para…

  • Verbal Person Centeredness in Interaction

    Open Access•Erina L Macgeorge, Sara E Branch et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Language and Social…•2019•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 28

Verbal person centeredness (VPC) is a long-dominant conceptualization of quality in supportive communication, but prior work provides limited guidance for researchers seeking to examine its impact in interaction. This study examined the extent to which overall VPC for an interaction is predicted by support providers' specific behaviors. In a laboratory setting, pairs of friends (320 dyads) discussed a problem that one of them was currently experi…

  • Dispositional Need to Belong Moderates the Impact of Negative Social Cues and Rejection on Self-Esteem

    James M Tyler, James Tyler et al.•ARTICLE•Social Psychology•2016•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 9

In two studies, we examined how need to belong as a dispositional variable influences the relational interpretation of social cues and the subsequent effect on self-esteem. Across both studies, the results from a negative (vs. positive) social cue condition showed that individuals high in need to belong were more negatively affected by (i.e., lower self-esteem, social involvement, and relational value) than those low in need to belong. Results fr…

  • Paths of Resistance

    Open Access•Erina L Macgeorge, L M Guntzviller et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Language and Social…•2016•Citada por: 7•Referencias: 29

Social scientists and conversation analysts have both focused on advice as a key form of support and influence, but neither have adequately connected patterns of verbal behavior in advice interactions to recipients' reduced satisfaction with advice. We address this concern with an interpretive discourse analysis of naturalistic "troubles talk" between college student friends. Transcripts ( N = 48) were selected for analysis from a larger study of…

  • Person and Thing Orientations

Open Access•Anna Woodcock, William G Graziano et al.•ARTICLE•Social Psychological and…•2013

Individuals differ in their orientation toward the people and things in their environment. This has consequences for important life choices. The authors review 15 studies on Person and Thing Orientations (PO-TO) using data from 7,450 participants to establish the nature of the constructs, their external correlates, and their predictive utility. These findings suggest that these two orientations are not bipolar and are virtually independent constr…

  • Committed to Oprah, Homer, or House

Sara E Branch, Kari Wilson et al.•ARTICLE•Psychology of Popular Media Culture•2013•Citada por: 8•Referencias: 16

People can develop close relationships with media figures viewed on TV. Across two studies we examined the extent to which satisfaction with, alternatives to, and investments in such parasocial relationships (PSR) account for feelings of commitment toward favored TV characters. In Study 1, satisfaction and investments positively predicted commitment to fictional TV characters, whereas the alternative of not following any TV character negatively p…
