Diet quality and dental caries in the Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos
An association between diet quality and dental caries was restricted to foreign-born Latinix and was not limited to the adverse impact of sugar-sweetened drinks
Unfair Treatment and Periodontitis Among Adults in the Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos (HCHS/SOL)
The association between sugar‐sweetened beverages and dental caries among third‐grade students in G eorgia
Higher consumption of SSBs is associated with higher caries prevalence among Georgia third graders after adjustment for important covariates. Consequently, health messages about SSBs from dentists, physicians, and other healthcare providers as well as policy approaches at the school, state, and national levels to limit consumption of SSBs may collectively impact both the development of dental caries and obesity, leading to overall better health f…
Assessing oral cancer early detection
This study documents considerable variability in dentists' knowledge and thoroughness of examinations. The scales provide tools for future studies for improving understanding of early detection of oral cancer in clinical practice
Oral Cancer Prevention and Early Detection Knowledge and Practices of Illinois Dentists – A Brief Communication
Interventions are needed to assure appropriate skill and knowledge levels for oral cancer early detection, management, and risk counseling by Illinois dentists
The Views of Dentists, Nurses and Nutritionists on the Association Between Diabetes and Periodontal Disease
Producing a resource list, cross-educating professionals about diabetes and oral health, training professionals to better serve Latino patients, developing appropriate protocols for each profession regarding the association between diabetes and periodontitis, and educating the community about diabetic control, oral health and disease prevention were identified as potential strategies to improve oral health among Latino persons with diabetes
Continuity of Medical Care, Health Insurance, and Nonmedical Advice in the First 3 Years of Life
OBJECTIVES: The study seeks to evaluate whether continuity in medical care provides a mechanism that contributes to increased parental awareness of the importance of dental services, nutrition, and child development and whether health insurance encourages such continuity. METHODS: Data pertaining to medical utilization and dental, child nutrition, and child development counseling were extracted from the National Maternal and Infant Health Survey,…
Training Status and Interest in Certification of Nondiplomate Faculty Teaching Predoctoral Dental Public Health
These nondiplomate teachers of predoctoral DPH desire training, but appear to have barriers and perceive few benefits to achieving DPH board certification
An Evaluation of NHANES III Estimates of Early Childhood Caries
The prevalence of ECC among children 12 to 23 months of age is barely detectable at the national level. Alternative study designs and improved case definitions are needed for further advances in ECC
Academic Dental Public Health Diplomates
Numerous challenges confront the development of a strong dental public health presence in US dental schools. These challenges include, among others, insufficient numbers of academic dental public health specialists and insufficient motivations to encourage promising candidates to pursue specialty status
Dental Caries in Homeless Adults in Boston
These findings show evidence of previous dental services utilization by these homeless individuals, but demonstrate a high need for preventive and restorative dental therapy
Considerations in Establishing a Dental Program for the Homeless
The homeless are a diverse group who present the dental profession with a number of difficult challenges in the delivery of oral health services. Utilization of dental services by the homeless is low when provided in traditional settings and access is limited. The purpose of this case study is to review program planning issues focusing on the unique aspects of establishing dental programs for the shelter-based homeless. This paper is based on exp…
The Assessment of Nursing Caries and Its Relationship to High Caries in the Permanent Dentition
The prevalence of nursing caries has been found to be high in populations of Native American children, unlike other US population groups. Comparisons among studies are difficult because a variety of operational definitions of the syndrome have been used. This study had two goals. First, a retrospective dental record audit was conducted for a Native American population attending Head Start in 1977-78, to compare the prevalence rates of nursing car…
