  • African food system and biodiversity mainly affected by urbanization via dietary shifts

    Open Access•Koen De Vos, Charlotte Janssens et al.•ARTICLE•Nature Sustainability•2024•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 10

The rapid urbanization in Africa profoundly affects local food and ecological systems. According to earlier research, urbanization may cause food production and biodiversity losses as agricultural or natural lands are absorbed by expanding cities. Land-use displacement effects may buffer agricultural production losses or may lead to additional biodiversity losses but are often overlooked. Moreover, impacts of dietary changes associated with urban…

  • Vegetation changes and sediment dynamics in the Lake Alaotra region, central Madagascar

    Open Access•Nils Broothaerts, Vao Fenotiana Razanamahandry et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2022•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 10

Madagascar is known for its high erosion rates in the central highlands, yet the role of human disturbance versus natural processes is not well understood and is a topic of ongoing debate. At present the necessary quantitative data to couple vegetation dynamics and sediment fluxes over time in Madagascar is scarce. This study aims to provide more insight in vegetation changes and sediment transfers over the last millennia in the Lake Alaotra regi…

  • Soil lifespans and how they can be extended by land use and management change

Open Access•Daniel Evans, John Quinton et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2020

Human-induced soil erosion is a serious threat to global sustainability, endangering global food security, driving desertification and biodiversity loss, and degrading other vital ecosystem services. To help assess this threat, we amassed a global inventory of soil erosion rates consisting of 10 030 plot years of data from 255 sites under conventional agriculture and soil conservation management. We combined these with existing soil formation dat…

  • Dissolved phosphorus transport from soil to surface water in catchments with different land use

Open Access•Dries Verheyen, Nele Van Gaelen et al.•ARTICLE•AMBIO•2015•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 38

Diffuse phosphorus (P) export from agricultural land to surface waters is a significant environmental problem. It is critical to determine the natural background P losses from diffuse sources, but their identification and quantification is difficult. In this study, three headwater catchments with differing land use (arable, pasture and forest) were monitored for 3 years to quantify exports of dissolved (<0.45 μm) reactive P and total dissolved P.…

  • Reconstruction of late-Holocene slope and dry valley sediment dynamics in a Belgian loess environment

    Open Access•Tom Rommens, Gert Verstraeten et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2007•Citada por: 4•Referencias: 4

To unravel the evolution of a dry valley in the Belgian loess area soils and sediments along a slope catena were studied in detail. A 67 m long trench was opened from the upper slope to the centre of the valley bottom. The exposed soils and sediments showed evidence of severe soil erosion and other human disturbances that significantly changed the valley topography. The early-Holocene slope gradient was up to 25%, whereas now it is less than 10%.…

  • Soil erosion and sediment deposition in the Belgian oess belt during the Holocene

    Open Access•Tom Rommens, Gert Verstraeten et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2005•Citada por: 12•Referencias: 3

A method to establish a Holocene sediment budget for a 103 ha agricultural catchment representative for the Belgian loess belt is presented. Soil erosion and sediment deposition were determined based on 185 coring locations and a large excavation in the valley bottom. Results were integrated in a GIS and interpolation techniques applied to derive spatial patterns of erosion and sedimentation. Total soil erosion, sediment deposition and sediment e…
