  • Volcanic evolution of the Somma-Vesuvius Complex (Italy)

Open Access•Alessandro Sbrana, Raffaello Cioni et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2020

A volcanological map of the active Somma-Vesuvius volcano is presented at the 1:20,000 scale. The map is based on 1:5000 field mapping carried out during the Italian CARG project. Geological data are represented on a digital terrain model of the volcano. This allows a better visualisation of the main morphological, volcanic, and geological features. The legend is organised in four different panels, which depict the activity of the volcano and cal…

  • Geology of La Reforma caldera complex, Baja California, Mexico

Open Access•L García Sánchez, José Luis Macías et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2019

A new geological map at 1:50,000 scale of La Reforma Caldera Complex has been produced applying modern survey methodologies to volcanic areas. This map aims to represent a reliable and objective tool to understand the geological evolution of the region. La Reforma Caldera Complex is a Pleistocene nested caldera located in the central part of the Baja California peninsula, Mexico. The twelve formations defined within the Quaternary volcanic record…

  • Tephrostratigraphy of paleoclimatic archives in central Mediterranean during the Bronze Age

Open Access•Giovanni Zanchetta, Monica Bini et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2019

  • Vegetation, climate and environmental history of the last 4500 years at lake Shkodra (Albania/Montenegro)

    Open Access•Laura Sadori, Marco Giardini et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2014•Citada por: 6•Referencias: 15

Three parallel overlapping cores have been taken in the Albanian side of Lake Shkodra (Albania/Montenegro). The chronological frame of the record, spanning approximately the last 4500 years, has been assessed using four radiocarbon dates and four well-known tephra layers of Italian volcanoes. Multidisciplinary analyses turned out to be decisive to understand environmental, climatic changes and human impact. Here, we focus on palynology. The humid…

  • A map for volcaniclastic debris flow hazards in Apennine areas surrounding the Vesuvius volcano (Italy)

Open Access•Marina Bisson, Giovanni Zanchetta et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2013

Volcaniclastic debris flows are dangerous natural phenomena that originate in volcanic areas not only during or shortly after an eruption but also during a period of volcanic quiescence, when heavy and/or persistent rains remobilize unconsolidated pyroclastic deposits. In Italy, one of the areas most affected by these phenomena is that of the Apennine Mountains which border the southern Campania Plain surrounding the Vesuvius volcano.Historical ac…

  • Constraining the onset of the Holocene “Neoglacial” over the central Italy using tephra layers

Open Access•Giovanni Zanchetta, Carlo Giraudi et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2012

A study of six tephra layers discovered in different deposits between 1600 and 2700 m a.s.l. in the Apennine chain in central Italy allowed precise stratigraphic constraints on environmental and climatic changes between ca. 4.5 and 3.8 cal ka BP. Chemical analyses allowed the correlation of these tephra layers with the eruptions of Agnano Mt Spina (AMST) from Phlegrean Field and Avellino (AVT) from Somma–Vesuvius. Major environmental changes in t…

  • Climate and environmental change in the Balkans over the last 17 ka recorded in sediments from Lake Prespa (Albania/F.Y.R. of Macedonia/Greece)

Open Access•Anne Aufgebauer, Konstantinos Panagiotopoulos et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2012

  • Late Pleistocene and Holocene contourite drift in Lake Prespa (Albania/F.Y.R. of Macedonia/Greece)

Open Access•Bernd Wagner, Anne Aufgebauer et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2012

  • Tephrostratigraphy, chronology and climatic events of the Mediterranean basin during the Holocene

    Open Access•Giovanni Zanchetta, Roberto Sulpizio et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2011•Citada por: 14•Referencias: 20

The identification and characterisation of high-frequency climatic changes during the Holocene requires natural archives with precise and accurate chronological control, which is usually difficult to achieve using only 14 C chronologies. The presence of time-spaced tephra beds in Quaternary Mediterranean successions represents an additional, independent tool for dating and correlating different sedimentary archives. These tephra layers are potent…
