Svenska Akademiens Ordbok and Oxford English Dictionary
The purpose of this paper is to compare the microstructure of two historical dictionaries, the dictionary of the Swedish Academy (Svenska Akademiens Ordbok, SAOB) and Oxford English Dictionary (OED), with particular reference to the principles underlying the organization of the various senses in the entry. This paper is concerned with the concept of norm and its place in a theory of linguistics: a number of factors need to be taken into consideration when deciding on a particular norm in the case of the teaching of English as an international language.
