Maya-British Conflict at the Edge of the Yucatecan Caste War
Since the publication of the first English-language book on the subject by Nelson Reed (in 1964), several scholars have dealt with the Caste War of Yucatán (1847–1901), one of the most important rural insurgencies in nineteenth-century Mexico, including Marie Lapointe, Don Dumond, Terry Rugeley, and myself. The main focus of these studies was on the Mexican part of the Yucatán Peninsula and the largest group of insurgents, the so-called Kruso'ob.…
Amerindian war and religion in the Eastern Woodlands of North America, seventeenth and eighteenth centuries
This article focuses on violent conflict among indigenous groups in the Eastern Woodlands of North America from the seventeenth to the late eighteenth century. Amerindian groups struggled here against European domination and among themselves for various reasons. However, warfare was conceived in spiritual and religious terms and remained a highly ritualized affair. With their long and intense history of martial interaction and the prominent role …
Human Sacrifice, Ritualised Violence and the Colonial Encounter in the Americas
This chapter presents several arguments concerning native and European colonial violence focusing on its ritual forms. Firstly, while Amerindian cannibalism and human sacrifice – particularly suited to the justification of conquest and colonial domination – were strongly reproached by the Europeans, some of their own behaviours resembled these practices more than they would admit. Secondly, while colonial discourse tended to construct a relativel…
Return to Ixil
Testaments are a rich source for understanding the past. They can provide information on a wide range of topics such as religious beliefs and practices; political status; economic, household, and family relationships, including the distribution of property; marriage patterns; social roles; and feelings toward others. This also applies to the more than 100 wills from the small Mayan community of Ixil, in the northwest of the Yucatan peninsula in M…

"God Save the King of the Mosquito Nation!" Indigenous Leaders on the Fringe of the Spanish Empire
The Miskitu Indians of Eastern Nicaragua and Honduras are one of the most numerous indigenous groups in the southern part of Central America. Never conquered by the Spaniards during the colonial era, they first came under control of the Central American republics in the late nineteenth century. Their leaders were known as "kings" from the early seventeenth century up until 1860. A scholarly debate has arisen on the character of these leaders: wer…

Concepts of Ethnicity
While ‘ethnicity’ is one of the most intensely discussed concepts in the social sciences, there is no general consensus on the exact meaning of the term. This article starts with an overview of its etymology and present usage. It then proposes a formal definition of ethnicity as a specific form of social differentiation whereby actors use cultural or phenotypic markers to distinguish themselves from others. It is argued that ethnic communities ar…
Of Friends and Foes

Social Categories, Ethnicity and the State in Yucatán, Mexico
This article discusses the development of social categories and ethnicity in the peninsula of Yucatán, Mexico, since the Conquest in the sixteenth century. Based on the Yucatec case, it demonstrates that ethnicity is not a ubiquitous form of social organisation, but rather a historical process related to specific techniques of social distinction. It argues that the starting point for the analysis of ethnicity should not be ethnic collectives, but…
Social and Cultural Conditions of Religious Conversion in Colonial Southwest Tanzania, 1891-1939
Starting from a discussion of theoretical approaches to conversion to Christianity, this article discusses the mission of the Protestant Moravian Church among the Nyakyusa of southwestern Tanzania. It shows that the missionaries' success did not depend on the alleged greater rationality of a world religion, nor was it simply a result of colonial domination. It depended on the ability of the to address existing inequalities and tensions within Nya…
