Nazareno Strampelli and the first Green Revolution
This article describes the wheat‐breeding work of the Italian agronomist Nazareno Strampelli, who was the first agronomist to cross Japanese and western wheat varieties to develop high‐yielding semidwarf wheat. The article describes the environmental and agricultural conditions that motivated Strampelli's breeding, the evolution of his varieties, their role in addressing agricultural and food supply problems in Fascist Italy, some of Strampelli's…

David Moon. The Plough That Broke the Steppes
David Moon's remarkable book examines Russian efforts to understand and alter the deterioration of the Eurasian steppe grasslands during the Russian Empire's agricultural assimilation of them in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Arguing from errors
In their recent book, The Years of Hunger: Soviet Agriculture, 1931 – 1933 (2004), a detailed study of the Soviet famine of those years, Robert Davies and Stephen Wheatcroft criticise my publicatio
Soviet Peasants and Collectivization, 1930-39
This article re-evaluates the widely held view that Soviet peasants responded only or predominantly with resistance to collectivization and work in Soviet collective farms. It analyses key examples of the evidence for this 'resistance interpretation' to show that the evidence is not representative of most peasants' actions. It presents new evidence and analysis to show that peasant responses cannot be reduced to resistance, that more often they a…
Entitlement, Shortage and the 1943 Bengal Famine
This article outlines an amendment to Amartya Sen's entitlement approach to famines and applies it to the Bengal Famine of 1943. The theoretical amendment - environmental production entitlement or EPE - expresses on an individual level the effects of natural disaster and shortage in a manner analogous to the way Sen's exchange entitlement reflects the effects on individuals of large-scale market shifts. In applying the new theoretical approach, t…

Stalin, Grain Stocks and the Famine of 1932-1933
Most western and all Soviet studies of the Stalinist economy have ignored the role played by the stockpiling of grain in the agricultural crisis of the early 1930s. Thus in his major work on Stalinist agriculture published in 1949, Naum Jasny frankly admitted that data were insufficient to reach a conclusion, merely noting that "stocks from former years probably declined during 1932." Baykov, Dobb, Volin and Nove said nothing about grain stocks. …

The 1932 Harvest and the Famine of 1933
Western and even Soviet publications have described the 1933 famine in the Soviet Union as "man-made" or "artificial." The Stalinist leadership is presented as having imposed harsh procurement quotas on Ukraine and regions inhabited by other groups, such as Kuban' Cossacks and Volga Germans, in order to suppress nationalism and to overcome opposition to collectivization. Proponents of this interpretation argue, using official Soviet statistics, t…
