Leprosy was a well-recognized and dreaded disease in medieval Europe. The disease is reported to have reached Germany with the Roman invasion and it was present in Scandinavia in the first centuries AD. This paper estimates and analyzes the frequency of leprosy among adult people buried in one of five medieval cemeteries in the city of Schleswig. Seven different dichotomous osteological lesions indicative of leprosy were analyzed, and it was poss…

  • Comparison of three segmental multifrequency bioelectrical impedance techniques in healthy adults

Open Access•Katharina Mally, Manuela Dittmar•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•2012

Differences exist between the three techniques which are primarily caused by inconsistent current pathways. A comparison with literature data showed that, in addition, subject's posture during measurement, electrode contact and electrode site may lead to inconsistent resistance and reactance values. This makes comparisons between different populations difficult. Therefore, this study recommends generally using the T2 technique which is standardiz…

  • Native highland and lowland populations differ in .Gamma.-globin gene promoter polymorphisms related to altered fetal hemoglobin levels and delayed fetal to adult globin switch after birth

Open Access•INKEN ROTTGARDT, Francisco Rothhammer et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropological Science•2010

Lowered partial oxygen pressure at high altitude exerts a strong selection pressure. Since hypoxia is most serious for the fetus, fetal hemoglobin genes (HBG1, HBG2) are candidates for genetic adaptation to high altitude. The aim of this study was to compare promoter polymorphisms of these genes for differences between highland and lowland populations. In 50 native highlanders of the Chilean Andes and 50 lowlanders of European ancestry, the promo…

  • Prevalence of Sarcopenia among Older Community-Dwelling People with Normal Health and Nutritional State

Kerstin Khalaj Hedayati, Manuela Dittmar•ARTICLE•Ecology of Food and Nutrition•2010

This study analyzed whether sarcopenia, a risk factor for disability in the aged, also occurs in healthy community-dwelling elders with normal nutritional state. As indicators, body cell mass (BCM) and lean body mass (LBM) were determined in 110 Germans (ages 60-83) using bioimpedance analysis. Nutritional status, muscle function, anthropometry, and physical activity level were investigated. Sarcopenia was already present in well nourished health…

  • Role of Oxidative DNA Damage and Antioxidative Enzymatic Defence Systems in Human Aging~!2008-08-08~!2008-10-29~!2008-12-05

Open Access•Manuela Dittmar, Melanie Knuth et al.•ARTICLE•The Open Anthropology Journal•2008

Oxidative stress is regarded as a main causal factor for natural aging. This study tested the hypothesis that healthy elderly people show higher oxidative DNA damage levels and lower antioxidative enzymatic defense capacities than younger ones. In a cross-sectional study, blood samples of 20 older (62-79 years) and 20 younger adults (24-28 years) were compared with respect to oxidative DNA damage in lymphocytes (alkaline elution), oxidative statu…

  • Comparison of bipolar and tetrapolar impedance techniques for assessing fat mass

    Open Access•Manuela Dittmar•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•2004

Whole body fat mass (BF) can be predicted by different bioimpedance (BIA) techniques measuring the whole body (tetrapolar hand‐to‐foot technique, HF), lower body (bipolar foot‐to‐foot technique, FF), or upper body (bipolar hand‐to‐hand technique, HH). This study analyzed 146 healthy volunteers (age 18–84 years) for whether these three techniques differ in their estimates of BF, and whether sex and age of the subjects influence estimates of BF. Re…

  • Validation of different bioimpedance analyzers for predicting cell mass against whole‐body counting of potassium ( 40 K) as a reference method

Open Access•Manuela Dittmar, Helmut Reber•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•2004

This study compared two different tetrapolar bioimpedance (BIA) devices for estimating body cell mass (BCM), validated them against whole‐body counting of 40 K (TBK method), and developed improved prediction equations for estimating BCM from BIA. In 50 healthy volunteers (age 23–65 years, BMI 18.6–27.7 kg/m 2 ), BCM was estimated with the BIA devices Nutriguard‐M (Data Input, Germany) and Soft‐Tissue‐Analyzer‐STA (Akern, Italy) and by the TBK met…
