“We Derive from Ramakrishna”
An Integral Advaitic theodicy of spiritual evolution
This article outlines and defends an ‘Integral Advaitic’ theodicy that takes its bearings from the thought of three modern Indian mystics: Sri Ramakrishna, Swami Vivekananda, and Sri Aurobindo. Their Integral Advaitic theodicy has two key dimensions: a doctrine of spiritual evolution and a panentheistic metaphysics. God has created this world as an arena for our moral and spiritual evolution in which evil and suffering are as necessary as good. T…

Bloomsbury Research Handbook of Emotions in Classical Indian Philosophy
Drawing on a rich variety of Indian texts across multiple traditions, including Vedanta, Buddhist, Yoga and Jain, this collection explores how emotional experience is framed, evoked and theorized in order to offer compelling insights into human subjectivity. Rather than approaching emotion through the prism of Western theory, a team of leading Indian philosophers showcase the unique literary texture, philosophical reflections and theoretical para…

Infinite Paths to Infinite Reality
Sri Ramakrishna is widely known as a nineteenth-century Indian mystic who affirmed the harmony of all religions on the basis of his richly varied spiritual experiences and eclectic religious practices, both Hindu and non-Hindu. In Infinite Paths to Infinite Reality , Ayon Maharaj argues that Sri Ramakrishna was also a sophisticated philosopher of great contemporary relevance. Through a careful study of Sri Ramakrishna’s recorded oral teachings in…
John Hick’s Vedāntic Road Not Taken?
This chapter explores the British philosopher John Hick’s early and late views on religious pluralism in the light of Sri Ramakrishna. Between 1970 and 1974, the early Hick espoused a Vedāntic theory of religious pluralism—based explicitly on Sri Aurobindo’s “logic of the infinite”—that comes remarkably close to Sri Ramakrishna’s pluralist model. According to the early Hick, each religion captures at least one true aspect of the impersonal-person…

The challenge of the oceanic feeling
In a letter written in 1927, the French writer Romain Rolland asked Sigmund Freud to analyse the ‘oceanic feeling,’ a religious feeling of oneness with the entire universe. I will argue that Rolland’s intentions in introducing the oceanic feeling to Freud were much more complex, multifaceted, and critical than most scholars have acknowledged. To this end, I will examine Rolland’s views on mysticism and psychoanalysis in his book-length biographie…
Swami Vivekananda's Vedāntic Critique of Schopenhauer's Doctrine of the Will
Recently, there has been a burgeoning of interest in the relationship between Schopenhauer's philosophy and Indian thought. Deussen, thoroughly trained in both indology and Western philosophy, was the first to bring Schopenhauer's philosophy into dialogue with Indian thought, especially Vedntic philosophy. Hecker, drawing on Deussen's work, wrote Schopenhauer und die indische Philosophie (1897), the first book-length comparison of Schopenhauer's …
