Special Issue Introduction
This Special Issue (SI) explores the enduring relationship between race and migration, arguing that race remains a central—yet often underexamined—analytical category in migration studies. Although overtly racialized migration policies have declined since the mid-20th century, racial dynamics continue to shape mobility regimes, access to rights, and perceptions of migrants across global contexts. This SI highlights how contemporary migration is s…
Motherhood on the move
Although family units migrating together represent a considerable share of migrants in the Americas, there is limited research exploring how migrating with children shapes women’s migratory cycles. This study uses new survey data, collected in 2022 from deportees in reception centres in Honduras and El Salvador, to explore how displacement, including transit and return, differed for women migrating with children compared to those without. We anal…
Gender, Displacement, and the Ethics of Protection
Focusing on the flight of women and girls from Venezuela to Brazil, and on South American refugee regimes, this paper addresses the ethics of forced displacement and the requirements of gender-responsive systems of protection. The analysis centers the voices of displaced women brought in through fieldwork in Manaus and Boa Vista, Brazil, in 2020–2022, to identify gaps and negative effects of gender-blind provision of shelter, healthcare, and othe…
Visual Narratives of Care and Reproduction in Forced Migration
Migration is deeply gendered, yet little is known about the lived experiences of displaced women or how they manage their reproductive health challenges. Here, we explore the meaning of sexual and reproductive health for displaced Venezuelan women in Brazil, using photovoice. This methodology revealed that women interpret 'sexual and reproductive health' in ways that go beyond medicalised understandings and include concerns more usually associate…
Wall of visas
Externalization happens when countries "extend" their borders beyond their territorial limits. While existing literature on it focuses on the "Global North", similar practices in the "Global South" are understudied and implemented differently, with a greater use of visas as a hidden type of externalization strategy. Little is known on whether these practices are racially determined. We partly fill this gap; focusing on Brazil, we demonstrate how …
Barriers and facilitators for the sexual and reproductive health and rights of displaced Venezuelan adolescent girls in Brazil
Host states must take action to enhance the right to sexual and reproductive health for adolescent migrants to allow them to make autonomous, independent and informed choices. A socioecological perspective on sexual and reproductive health and rights can help formulate intersectional policies that interconnect different levels of adolescent migrants' experience
The paradox of choice in the sexual and reproductive health and rights challenges of south-south migrant girls and women in Central America and Mexico
The last decade has seen high levels of displacement in Central America and Mexico, with women and girls representing a growing share of this flow. Women and girls face a unique set of sexual and reproductive health risks, both as a direct result of the migration process, and as a consequence of violence, conflict and oppressive gender norms in the region. This scoping review adopts a five-stage process to search for, identify, and review selecte…
Ethical and methodological challenges of conducting research of ‘asylum institutional elites’
Research with elite groups poses a number of challenges for researchers. The study of asylum institutional elites brings even further difficulties, considering the political interests surrounding the topic. This paper considers these difficulties in the context of studying asylum institutional elites in Brazil in the author’s own PhD research, and provides the answers found to overcome some of these challenges. Albeit important, being able to acc…
Securitisation, humanitarian responses and the erosion of everyday rights of displaced Venezuelan women in Brazil
This article explores the gendered securitisation of humanitarianism through the lens of Venezuelan women who have fled to Brazil, as part of the largest migration flow in South America. By the end of 2022, the number of displaced Venezuelans had grown to seven million, half of whom were women and girls. Alongside humanitarian programmes, measures of migration control, policing and deterrence are now routinely implemented. This article explores t…
