The Amchi at the Margins
Introduction. The Indian Face of Sowa Rigpa
Healing at the Periphery
India has long occupied an important place in Tibetan medicine's history and development. However, Indian Himalayan practitioners of Tibetan medicine, or amchi, have largely remained overlooked at the Tibetan medical periphery, despite playing a central social and medical role in their communities. Power and legitimacy, religion and economic development, biomedical encounters and Indian geopolitics all intersect in the work and identities of cont…

Regulation Multiple
This article revisits the conceptualisation of pharmaceutical regulation. While States and multilateral organisations play a central part in devising rules, regulation as a social practice extends beyond their role. Domestic and international interests, geopolitics and spatial configurations, commercial and health considerations, governmental policies and individual behaviours and legal and illegal transactions all contribute to regulating the ph…
The Vagaries of Therapeutic Globalization. Fame, Money and Social Relations in Tibetan Medicine
Studies of the international diffusion of Asian medicine tend to overlook the social mechanisms involved in the transnational circulation of therapists. This article, built around the biography of a female practitioner of Tibetan medicine, demonstrates that upward social mobility gained through individual involvement in the NGO sector allows for the mobilization of transnational networks which sometimes offer travel opportunities in return. In th…
Diversion and Globalization in Biomedical Technologies
The intensification of transnational exchanges since the mid-twentieth century has contributed to the global diffusion of biomedical technologies and has shaped their histories in dramatic ways. These technologies became a central medium for a vast array of practices found in medical institutions worldwide, as well as a blurring agent of the boundaries between nature and culture (Lock and Nguyen 2010;Rheinberger 2000).However, technologies such as…
Genealogy and Ambivalence of a Therapeutic Heterodoxy. Islam and Tibetan Medicine in North-western India
This paper examines the case of a Shiite practitioner of Tibetan medicine in Ladakh, North-western India. It recounts the story of a Buddhist family converted to Islam, for which the abandonment of religion has not led to the discontinuation of a lineal medical practice known to have Buddhist overtones. This situation provides an invitation to explore the social consequences of maintaining the practice in a region characterized by religious confl…

Hangover free! The social and material trajectories of PartySmart
This paper presents three embedded episodes in the life of a polyherbal drug indicated as a preventative measure for hangovers. Invented and marketed in 2005 by a leading ayurvedic pharmaceutical company in India, PartySmart is a reformulated compound based on ayurvedic, biomedical and phytochemical sources. This creative process has involved multiple translations, resulting in hybrid pharmacological models, including, for instance, ayurvedic pos…
Pervious Drugs
What makes it possible for ayurvedic pharmaceutical objects to come into being? To answer this question, this paper takes an ontological route in line with local epistemologies, in which the objectness of the thing is itself taken as quite porous and susceptible to circumstances. This approach has much in common with science and technology studies: objects acquire meaning in a specific context, itself embedded in a relational network at a specifi…
Introduction
The Reformulation Regime in Drug Discovery
In so-called traditional medicine in South Asia, substances have not ordinarily been prescribed or consumed in isolation, yet the transformations of compound formulations have been comparatively little studied from any position within anthropology or history. Since the early twentieth century, ayurvedic formulations have often been redesigned to address the biomedical disorders of a new global clientele. This has involved overlapping medical cult…

Asian therapeutic knowledge and globalization
As medical knowledge crosses cultures and borders, brought into contact by trade, conquest, colonialism or religious proselytism, it is subject to cross-cultural histories, reciprocal borrowings and exchanges in the fields of theory and therapy. The history of Middle Eastern and Asian scholarly traditions provides a good account of the transfer of knowledge and the transformation of the forms of therapeutic knowledge that influence each other.
