  • Dilemmas of Care (Re) Allocation

Open Access•Travis Heath, Teresa Heath et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Business Ethics•2025

Studies into the ethical aspects of consumption tend to focus on a limited class of actions that are explicitly understood as “ethical consumption”. The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic provided a context in which other ethical issues and questions of whom we should care for first, and how, suddenly and dramatically gained salience. This article draws on the care literature to explore the reconfiguration of consumption decisions and dilemmas during this perio…

  • The Cumulative Effects of Marketized Care

    Open Access•Andreas Chatzidakis, G M Eckhardt et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Consumer Research•2025•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 83

Care is increasingly marketized. Previous marketing and consumer research has focused on specific tensions underlying marketized care provision and the ways in which consumers navigate them. In contrast, this conceptual article draws on interdisciplinary research on care to develop a cumulative understanding of marketized care, that is, based on those effects that build up over time when a critical mass of consumers routinely addresses care needs…

  • Tourism and the perils of an oppositional atmosphere

    Open Access•Andreas Chatzidakis, Pauline Maclaran•ARTICLE•Annals of Tourism Research•2023•Citada por: 4•Referencias: 31

Using Exarcheia, a neighbourhood in Athens, as our research context, we identify an oppositional atmosphere that is encouraging a major growth in anarcho-tourism to the area. We illustrate how the production and consumption of this unique atmosphere depends on the many grassroots initiatives and anti-authoritarian mobilisations that are predominant in Exarcheia, and how the atmosphere is being threatened by the encroachment of tourism provision. …

  • Care and consumption

    Andreas Chatzidakis•ARTICLE•Consumption and Society•2022•Referencias: 5

Laurence Godin’s (2022) piece is a very welcome and commendable attempt to provide a broader synthetisation of the current literature on care and consumption, and to generate some critical insights for future work in this area. I am drawing on Godin’s article to make some further observations. These are three-fold, pertaining to our current understandings of care, markets and consumption respectively

  • An anatomy of carewashing

    Open Access•Andreas Chatzidakis, Jo Littler•ARTICLE•International Journal of Cultural…•2022•Citada por: 12•Referencias: 8

This article defines 'carewashing' as commercial branding strategies which commodify care and attempt to increase corporate profit, and provides the first theorisation and historicisation of the term. The first section of the article situates 'carewashing' in relation to longer-term strategies of corporate 'social responsibility' and cause-related marketing. The second shows how established corporate practices are being reinvented in an era of Co…

  • Ethical Consumption Communities Across Physical and Digital Spaces

Open Access•Vera Hoelscher, Andreas Chatzidakis•ARTICLE•Journal of Business Ethics•2021

While there is an extensive body of literature about the impact of sharing physical space on ethical consumption, and a growing body of literature that addresses the impact of digital technologies on ethical consumption, there is little research on the increasing intersections between the physical and digital realms. This study explores the distinct affordances of physical and digital spaces and how they may work in both complementary and synergi…

  • Consuming Worker Exploitation? Accounts and Justifications for Consumer (In)action to Modern Slavery

Open Access•Michal Carrington, Andreas Chatzidakis et al.•ARTICLE•Work Employment and Society•2021•Citada por: 7•Referencias: 39

While research has examined the plight of vulnerable workers, the role of consumers who drive demand for slave-based services and products has been largely neglected. This is an important gap given both historical evidence of the effectiveness of 18th and 19th century anti-slavery consumer activism and recent attempts to regulate slavery through harnessing consumer power, such as the UK's Modern Slavery Act 2015. This article draws on data from i…

  • The Regeneration of Consumer Movement Solidarity

Open Access•Andreas Chatzidakis, Pauline Maclaran et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Consumer Research•2021•Citada por: 9•Referencias: 82

Consumer research has focused on the various resources and tactics that help movements achieve a range of institutional and marketplace changes. Yet, little attention has been paid to the persistence of movement solidarity, in particular its regeneration, despite a range of threats to it. Our research unpacks mechanisms that help consumer movement solidarity to overcome threats. Drawing on a 6-year ethnographic study of consumer movements in Exar…

  • From carewashing to radical care

Andreas Chatzidakis, Jamie Hakim et al.•ARTICLE•Feminist Media Studies•2020•Citada por: 35•Referencias: 3

Care, in all its permutations, is the buzzword of the moment, its meanings draining away in its constant evocation. Here, we briefly expand on older and newer meanings of care in the wake of Covid-19. These include the increasingly blurred boundaries between what has been traditionally understood as “care work” versus “essential work”; desperate attempts by corporations to promote themselves as ‘caring’; and the adoption of reactionary rather tha…

  • Implicit feminist solidarity(ies)? The role of gender in the social movements of the Greek crisis

    Open Access•Hara Kouki, Andreas Chatzidakis•ARTICLE•Gender Work and Organization•2020•Citada por: 8•Referencias: 26

This article explores the role of gender in the social movements of the Greek crisis. Building on extensive fieldwork, we observe a gradual shift from claim‐based, street mobilizations to locally embedded solidarity initiatives that addressed social reproduction needs in relation to food, health, education, and housing. We illustrate how this foregrounded social reproductive practices; challenged traditional divisions of labor and the temporaliti…

  • Chronotopic dilemmas

    Open Access•Andreas Chatzidakis•ARTICLE•Environment and Planning D…•2020•Citada por: 7•Referencias: 59

This paper explores the spatio-temporal dimensions of consumer activism during the Greek crisis. Existing work has provided valuable insights into the figure of the political consumer and the socio-spatial contexts in which consumer activism is enacted. The paper presents original six-year ethnographic work that extends current knowledge through exploring how the spatial and temporal dimensions of consumer activism are unsettled and reconfigured …

  • A psycho-social approach to consumer ethics

Open Access•Andreas Chatzidakis, Deirdre Shaw et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Consumer Culture•2018•Citada por: 10•Referencias: 12

Research into consumer ethics has grown considerably over the last two decades. However, most studies adopt either a psychological or a socio-cultural approach and there has been little in the way of bridging the two together. Accordingly, we draw on Kleinian psychoanalysis as a means of advancing an explicitly psycho-social understanding of consumer ethics. Following an emerging tradition that conceptualizes moral dilemmas as questions of care, …

  • Making sense of drinking

    Open Access•Mario Piacentini, Maria G Piacentini et al.•ARTICLE•Sociology of Health & Illness•2012•Citada por: 13•Referencias: 32

This article contributes to the understanding of how students neutralise potential feelings of guilt and stigmatisation regarding their alcohol consumption. We report findings from two qualitative studies with students at a UK university. The aim of the research was to uncover the range and ways in which neutralisation and counter-neutralisation techniques are used by drinkers and abstainers/near-abstainers in managing their alcohol position. Stu…

  • Marketing 'ethically questionable' politics

    Mona Moufahim, Andreas Chatzidakis•ARTICLE•Consumption Markets & Culture•2012•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 60

The success experienced by the extreme right parties across Western Europe and the persistent loyalty of their voters has sparked the interest of academics and broader society. Some of their theses are controversial, if not unethical, but nevertheless increasingly successful in Western European democracies. This paper seeks to explain how extreme right parties address the voters and manage to overcome people's aversion for racism and xenophobia i…
