  • Three Faces of Sun Tzu

Open Access•Scott A Boorman, Scott Boorman•BOOK•Three Faces of Sun Tzu•2024

Sun Tzu's Art of War is widely regarded as the most influential military & strategic classic of all time. Through 'reverse engineering' of the text structured around 14 Sun Tzu 'themes,' this rigorous analysis furnishes a thorough picture of what the text actually says, drawing on Chinese-language analyses, historical, philological, & archaeological sources, traditional commentaries, computational ideas, and strategic & logistics perspectives. Bu…

CONCEPTS OF SOCIAL STRUCTURE FROM A COMPARATIVE VIEWPOINT Comparative sociology challenges us to think in truly comparative terms about social structures as alien to humans (or to each other) as, for example, the societies of coelenterates and cooperative arachnids. Recent empirical work, particularly in pheromone chemistry, impels fresh theoretical analysis of this problem of general sociology (compare Merton 1967, pp. 162-65). First, a basic to…

  • Social Structure from Multiple Networks. I. Blockmodels of Roles and Positions

Harrison C White, Scott A Boorman et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Sociology•1976•Citada por: 135

Networks of several distinct types of social tie are aggregated by a dual model that partitions a population while simultaneously identifying patterns of relations. Concepts and algorithms are demonstrated in five case studies involving up to 100 persons and up to eight types of tie, over as many as 15 time periods. In each case the model identifies a concrete social structure. Role and position concepts are then identified and interpreted in ter…

  • Social Structure from Multiple Networks. II. Role Structures

    Scott A Boorman, Harrison C White•ARTICLE•American Journal of Sociology•1976•Citada por: 30

Role structures in small populations are given operational meaning as algebras generated from the sociometric blockmodels of Part I by Boolean multiplication (matrix multiplication employing binary arithmetic). Many different sociometric structures can yield the same algebraic multiplication table, which captures a different level of social structure. Elements of the algebras are interpreted concretely as compound roles, and interlock among these…

Perhaps the most pivotal factor in the psycholo gy of modern China has been the conflict subsystem of Chi nese behavior. As a framework for studying this system, the extensive data on some six hundred prominent individuals of the 1900-1950 period contained in the Biographical Diction ary o f Republican China furnish a logical data base and point of departure. Turning first to the conceptual foundations, we identify "face" as a guiding tenet, char…
