Japan is faced with sustainability challenges such as resource security and depopulation. Well-coordinated, multifaceted actions including a shift from imported fossil to locally available renewable resources and empowering of rural areas are vital in tackling these challenges. Here, we present our co-learning approach to practice the multifaceted actions with a case study on Tanegashima, an isolated Japanese island. In these actions, thorough un…

  • First palaeopathological example of Kienböck's disease from early modern Sakhalin Ainu

Open Access•Masashi Nakai, Koji Inoue et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2002

A disorder of the carpal lunate has been diagnosed as Kienböck's disease in a skeleton of a middle‐aged Ainu male that was excavated from Sakhalin Island, northeast Asia. The bone lesion is primarily and unilaterally associated with the right wrist, where the right carpal lunate is collapsed and the radiocarpal joint shows degenerative arthritis. Interestingly, the left arm is more robust than the right and the left elbow shows considerable osteo…

  • Vertebral age changes in Japanese macaques

    Open Access•Masashi Nakai•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2001•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 16

This study deals with maturation and aging of the vertebrae in Japanese macaques ( Macaca fuscata fuscata ) of known chronological age. The samples used were 103 skeletons of captive raised Japanese macaques varying in age from 6–23 years. Epiphyseal union between the vertebral body and the epiphyseal disk (epiphyseal ring, annular epiphysis) and degenerative changes of the vertebrae were macroscopically examined. It was revealed that vertebral e…

  • Spinal degenerative lesions and spinal ligamentous ossifications in ancient Chinese populations of the Yellow River Civilization

Open Access•Sinsuke Hukuda, Koji Inoue et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2000

Rheumatological diseases, whether inflammatory or degenerative, are ubiquitous among modern Asian people but very few palaeopathological studies have been performed in Asia on this subject. Since 1996, we have been carrying out a palaeoepidemiological survey of rheumatic diseases in ancient Chinese and Japanese skeletal populations. Findings on the spinal column in ancient Chinese populations (ca. 5000 bc–ad 1644) in Henan Province (centre of the…

  • Healed bone fractures in a jomon skeletal population from the Yoshigo shell mound, Aichi Prefecture, Japan

Open Access•Masashi Nakai, Koji Inoue et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•1999

Healed bone fractures were quantitatively analyzed in an ancient Japanese population. The sample studied consisted of the skeletal remains of 160 adult individuals from the Yoshigo shell mound (ca. BP 3400-2400), Aichi prefecture, Japan. Healed fractures were diagnosed from the presence of callus formation and/or angular deformity. Fractures were frequently seen in small bones of the hand and foot such as the metacarpals, rather than in large lon…

  • Erosive peripheral polyarthritis in ancient Japanese skeletons

Open Access•Koji Inoue, Sinsuke Hukuda et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•1999

The antiquity of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is still in dispute, due to the difficulty of conclusively differentiating peripheral polyarthritis, especially from spondyloarthropathy, in archaeological populations. In view of the importance of genetic factors in developing spondyloarthropathy and of the far lower prevalence of the disease in modern Japanese, a rarity of peripheral polyarthritis would be anticipated in the ancient Japanese population…

  • Erosive Arthritis of the Foot with Characteristic Features of Tophaceous Gout in the Jomon Skeletal Population

    Open Access•Koji Inoue, Hukuda et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropological Science•1998•Citada por: 1

We describe the oldest evidence of gout from skeletal remains found in Asia. A middle-aged male skeleton excavated from the shell mound at Ohta in Onomichi-city, Hiroshima prefecture, Western Japan (the middle Jomon period: 4500-3500 BP), showed erosive arthritis in the forefoot. The characteristic feature of the erosions observed in the present skeleton is a periosteal bone apposition at the outer aspect of the involved cortex and a “punched-out…
