The Impact of Acculturation Level on Weight Status and Weight Outcomes in Hispanic Children
A one‐year school‐based diet/exercise intervention improves non‐traditional disease biomarkers in Mexican‐American children
School-based interventions are an effective way to treat childhood obesity. The purpose of the present study was to biologically validate an established school-based intervention designed to reduce standardised body mass index (zBMI) over a period of 12 months. This intervention focused on a subset of Mexican-American children who were participating in a larger clinical weight loss study. Plasma samples were analysed from self-identified Mexican-…
Relationships Between Weight and Body Dissatisfaction, Body Esteem, and Teasing in African American Girls
This study assessed the relation between weight and weight-related factors (i.e., body dissatisfaction, body esteem, teasing frequency, and the effects of teasing) in a community sample of prepubescent African American girls. African American girls (N = 97) in Grades 3 to 5 completed the McKnight Risk Factor Survey-Third Edition and had their heights and weights taken to calculate body mass index (BMI). Participants were from two public elementar…
Psychometric characteristics of the General Well-Being Schedule (GWB) with African–American women
Validity and Reliability of the General Well-Being Schedule With Northern Plains American Indians Diagnosed With Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus
Evaluation of a Culturally Appropriate Intervention to Increase Physical Activity
The intervention did not increase physical activity in this population. Differences in baseline activity and contamination of the control group may partially account for the outcome
Effects of a low cholesterol eating plan on plasma lipids
In an attempt to demonstrate whether individuals with average plasma lipids would accept a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol, members of a community organization were taught the HELP Your Heart Eating Plan. Results of 282 individuals suggest that reduced dietary cholesterol from selected foods could be sustained for up to 36 months. While both plasma cholesterol and triglycerides fell during a year of instruction, both rose to above initi…
