Nonstandard work schedules and work-life balance in dual-earner households
Objective: This study examines whether nonstandard work schedules (NSWS) improve or hinder work-life balance (WLB) for parents and non-parents in dual-earner households. Background: Previous research shows that NSWS can negatively affect workers' well-being. However, less is known about whether and to what extent these effects differ between parents and childless individuals. Method: Using data from the first wave of the German Family Demography …
Parents’ Work–Family Conflict and Children’s Emotional Well-Being
Despite growing evidence that parental work–family conflict (WFC) affects children’s emotional well-being, little is known about the multiple pathways underlying such effects. This study examines the association between parental WFC and children’s emotional well-being and the potential mediating role of parenting behaviors in this process. Using the German Family Panel data from wave 6 (2013/2014), wave 8 (2015/2016), wave 10 (2017/2018), and wav…
Parental Separation and Children's Peer Relations
Highlights Parental separation raises children’s peer rejection but not friendship integration. Peer rejection increases after separation and remains high for up to four years. No moderating effects were found for the child’s age, the child’s gender, or parental education. Separation impairs peer relations primarily by heightening children’s socioemotional difficulties
Ceilings
One reason gender earning gaps persist is that well-paid jobs presume long work hours, and these are incompatible with family care. Long hours also harm health, and the risks may increase for workers with care and domestic workloads, adding a gendered health penalty. Using representative, longitudinal data from Australia and Germany (144,430–153,659 observations for HILDA and SOEP surveys, respectively, 2002–2022), we model the interconnections b…
Why Parenthood Strains Relationships
Objective This study examines three key pathways in the association between the transition to parenthood and declining relationship satisfaction. Background The decline in relationship satisfaction among new parents is well documented, yet research on the underlying mechanisms remains limited. This study investigated three commonly proposed pathways: gendered shifts in household labor and resulting perceptions of unfairness, increases in negative…
Parental depressiveness and children’s emotional problems
This study used panel data to examine the longitudinal effect of maternal and paternal depressiveness on children’s emotional difficulties in two-parent families in Germany. The main purpose was to examine whether the strength of this association differs depending on whether parents or children themselves assessed children’s emotional difficulties. Based on data from 1,586 children from the German Family Panel (pairfam), our findings show much st…
Downward educational mobility and the life satisfaction of adolescents and parents
Don’t blame the kids
Single, separated mothers report lower levels of psychological well-being than partnered mothers. This study examines whether this penalty in well-being results from the burdens of single parenting or from the stress and strain of union dissolution. The data come from the German Socio-Economic Panel (SOEP). Our sample consists of 1919 childless women and mothers who reported a union dissolution. We used fixed effects models to examine changes in …
Relationship Satisfaction Across the Transition to Parenthood
The transition to parenthood is often accompanied by declines in relationship satisfaction. Using longitudinal data from six waves of the German family panel pairfam ( N = 1,739), the authors tested whether these declines are driven by increases in and more intense forms of conflict (differential exposure hypothesis) and by a greater sensitivity to relationship conflicts after the transition to parenthood (differential vulnerability hypothesis). …
Long work hours of mothers and fathers are linked to increased risk for overweight and obesity among preschool children
BACKGROUND: Most existing studies on maternal employment and childhood overweight/obesity are from the USA. They are predominantly cross-sectional and show a consistent linear association between the two. Less is known about the joint impact of fathers' and mothers' work hours on childhood overweight and obesity. OBJECTIVES: To examine the impact of maternal and paternal work hours on overweight/obesity among children aged 1-6 years in Germany us…
The reproduction of educational inequalities - do parenting and child behavioural problems matter
The strong link between parental socioeconomic status (SES) and children's success in school is well established. However, mechanisms that underpin this association remain a major issue in current research on social inequality. Using data from the Families in Germany Study and structural equation modelling, this study demonstrates that parenting styles and child behavioural problems explain, in part, the association between parental SES and child…
Evening and night work schedules and children's social and emotional well-being
An emerging body of evidence shows that parents’ non-standard work schedules have a detrimental effect on children's well-being. However, only a limited number of studies have investigated mediating factors that underpin this association. Likewise, only a few studies have examined the impact of fathers’ non-standard work schedules on children's well-being. Based on data from the Families in Germany Study (FiD), this study aimed to address these r…
Parenthood and Life Satisfaction in Europe
Single Motherhood and Life Satisfaction in Comparative Perspective
Life satisfaction research regularly identifies single mothers as relatively unhappy. This comparative study refines this view by assessing how broader institutional and cultural contexts shape the life satisfaction of single mothers. Using data from the European Social Survey for 24 European countries, this study shows that generous family benefits, extensive child care provision, and high levels of gender equality are associated with smaller li…
Poverty and Child Behavioral Problems
The detrimental impact of poverty on child behavioral problems is well-established, but the mechanisms that explain this relationship are less well-known. Using data from the Families in Germany Study on parents and their children at ages 9-10 (middle childhood), this study extends previous research by examining whether or not and to what extent different parenting styles and parents' subjective well-being explain the relationship between poverty…
Sons, Daughters, and the Parental Division of Paid Work and Housework
Children play an important role in shaping the division of labor within couples. This study examines whether the impact of parenthood on the household division of paid work and housework is moderated by child gender, and thereby extends previous work on the effect of child gender on family life. The empirical analysis used fixed effects models and data from the German Socio-Economic Panel (1985-2011, N = 7,572). It showed that both fathers and mo…
The Work and Wishes of Fathers
We examine the connection between fatherhood and employment hours using 30 years of data from the German Socio-Economic Panel (SOEP 1985–2014). By inspecting how actual hours, preferred hours, and the correspondence between actual and preferred hours change during fatherhood, we clarify the interplay between fathers’ preferences and the labour market structures they encounter. We find that men born in 1960 or earlier prefer to (and are able to) i…
Aktuelle Entwicklungen in der deutschen Familiensoziologie
How and in which areas did our knowledge of family structures, family dynamics and the determinants of family change improve in the past decade? Which substantive areas receive most attention and which questions are underresearched? Which methods are commonly applied in empirical family research and what can we say about data availability? This article reviews the current discussion and recent research on these questions in German family sociolog…
Parenthood, child care, and nonstandard work schedules in Europe
An increasing proportion of the European labor force works in the evening, at night or on weekends. Because nonstandard work schedules are associated with a number of negative outcomes for families and children, parents may seek to avoid such schedules. However, for parents with insufficient access to formal child care, working nonstandard hours or days may be an adaptive strategy used to manage child-care needs. It enables ‘split-shift’ parentin…
Family policies and fathers' working hours
Despite extensive research on the effect of family policies on the labour supply of mothers, little is known about how these policies affect fathers' labour market outcomes. Using European panel data (EU-SILC) from 2003 to 2009 and multi-level models, this study analyses the effect of family policies on fathers' working hours. The results indicate that fathers work less than childless men if they live in countries that offer well paid, non-transf…
The Rise and Decline of the Male Breadwinner Model
In this article, we provide a long-term East–West comparison of partnered women’s employment from the 1940s into the first decade of the new millennium in Germany, and focus on the nexus of gainful employment and family-related responsibilities in women’s lives. Based on an analysis of the institutionally and culturally shaped opportunity structures that define the conditions for partnered women’s employment, we identify distinct periods of suppo…
Parenthood and Life Satisfaction
Previous research on the association between parenthood and life satisfaction has shown that parents of minor children are not more satisfied with their lives than childless people. This study addressed the question of why children do not enhance their parents' life satisfaction. A major objective of this study was to determine whether and to what extent the costs of raising children act as suppressors of life satisfaction. The empirical analysis…
Elternschaft und Lebenszufriedenheit in Deutschland

Marriage and Earnings
This article investigates how marriage affects the wages of men in Germany. A variety of reasons have been proposed for why married men earn higher wages than single men; however, previous tests of the leading explanations have been inconclusive. Using data from the German Socio-Economic Panel, it is found that married men enjoy a wage premium even after controlling for self-selection into marriage. In contrast to the popular household specializa…

Unemployment Benefits, Unemployment Duration and Subsequent Job Quality
The high unemployment figures in many European countries are often attributed to overgenerous unemployment benefits. However, proponents of benefit cuts tend not to recognize that unemployment benefits also facilitate longer job searches and, as a result, ultimately improve job matches. In this article, we investigate the effects of unemployment benefits on subsequent job quality by differentiating between transitions from unemployment to correct…
Crowding-out of Unskilled Workers in the Business Cycle
The paper addresses the question of if and how processes of cyclical crowding-out contribute to the disproportionate increase in unemployment of the less-educated during recessions. To this end, transitions from unemployment to low-skilled jobs and vice versa are analysed using data from the German Socio-Economic Panel (GSOEP). It is found that skilled workers increasingly occupy low-skilled jobs during recessions and thus diminish employment cha…

Career Prospects of Overeducated Workers in West Germany
Individual dynamics of overeducation are analysed for vocationally trained workers using work history data from the German Life History Study (GLHS). The primary focus of interest is whether overeducation is a persistent or a temporary phenomenon for the affected workers. To analyse this question, we compare the career patterns of vocationally trained overeducated workers with those of their unskilled co-workers with respect to upward mobility to…
