  • "Language maintenance among "fortunate immigrants

Jacqueline Lindenfeld, Gabrielle Varro•ARTICLE•International Journal of the…•2008•Citada por: 2

Our comparison of French immigrants in the United States and American immigrants in France (based on extensive fieldwork in each case) first reveals similarities regarding their motives for emigration, demographic and sociocultural characteristics, and contacts with the homeland. However, some marked differences also emerge on closer examination, particularly in the area of language behavior, analyzed here in terms of family bilingualism. In an a…

Lindenfeld Jacqueline - "The comparative study of ordinary communication". A number of issues at the theoretical and methodological levels regard the comparative study of ordinary communication. First of all, how should we conceive it, and why has this «genre» been cultivated less than particularistic studies in the ethnography of communication, despite the program of research proposed by Hymes and Gumperz in the early 60 's ? Second, what method…

A comparison of various public places in the city (public parks and malls, shopping places other than periodic markets, cafés and periodic markets) put into focus the extremely fluid nature of sociability on marketplaces ; speech is one of the essential ingredients of this sociability. Two types of speech patterns (vendors' calls and jokes), precisely because of th…

Peut-on apprendre à «écrire» l'ethnographie ?

  • The Social Conditioning of Syntactic Variation in French 1

    Open Access•Jacqueline Lindenfeld•ARTICLE•American Anthropologist•1969•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 3

This is an attempt to correlate nonlinguistic and linguistic events in order to make explicit some of the “rules” by which members of a given society can intuitively categorize speakers and speech situations within that society. Syntactic variation in French, as analyzed within the framework of transformational grammar, is shown here to be conditioned by both sociological and contextual factors. This pilot study is based on twenty‐four samples of…
