  • Tracking the Dynamics of human Colonisation and Adaptation in Central Vanuatu

    Open Access•Bedford, Stuart Bedford et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeology in Oceania/Archæology…•2026•Referencias: 32

In October 2022 an extensive archaeological landscape was identified by staff of the Vanuatu Cultural Centre at Pangpang on the east coast of Efate Island in central Vanuatu. It included midden deposits on the banks of the Pangpang River near the sea at Forari Bay where Lapita and Early Erueti‐style pottery sherds were recovered. • Changing subsistence practices in pre-European populations of South Vanuatu

Open Access•F Valentin, Estelle Herrscher et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2024•Referencias: 26

First analysis of diet practice of pre-European individuals from South Vanuatu using carbon and nitrogen data from bone collagen. • An expanded baseline of local resources based on taxonomic identification by proteomic determinations (Zooarchaeology by Mass Spectrometry). • South Vanuatu humans would have consumed mainly marine coral reef fish, C3 plants, and mangrove resources. Differences in dietary patterns between the islands of South Vanuatu…

  • Patterns of Mortuary Practice over Millennia in Southern Vanuatu, South Melanesia

    F Valentin, Wanda Zinger et al.•ARTICLE•Asian perspectives•2022

Burial practices provide a window into cultural practices, beliefs, and cross-cultural contacts through time. Southern Vanuatu's history begins with an initial Lapita colonization 3000 b.p., followed by Polynesian contacts after roughly 1000 years ago, and European encounters starting almost 250 years ago. Using a combination of re-analyzed legacy data from archaeological excavations in the 1960s and recent excavations, this article provides a sy…

  • Under the mission steps

    Open Access•J L Flexner, Edson Willie•ARTICLE•Journal of Pacific Archaeology•2015

Archaeological excavations at the late-19th century mission house at Kwamera, south Tanna Island, Vanuatu uncovered an inhumation directly underneath the mission step. Radiocarbon dating of the context revealed this burial to date to the 12th or 13th century AD. In addition to providing new information about the deeper past on Tanna, this finding provides some interesting material for thinking about long-term relationships to ancestors and sacred…

  • Iarisi's Domain

J L Flexner, Edson Willie et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Island and Coastal…•2015•Citada por: 4•Referencias: 27

Archaeological data provide a critical perspective on the emergent relationships between Melanesians and Europeans during the mid-nineteenth century. Particularly important to the discussion are the native landscapes within which Europeans settled. As part of a larger exploration of early missionary settlement in southern Vanuatu, archaeologists working closely with local fieldworkers surveyed the native villages at Kwaraka and Anuikaraka, south …
