Ear Advantage for Speech in Groups of Right- and Left-Handed Subjects
In a continuation of previous experiments, choice reaction times were measured for a key-pressing response to natural utterances of the word pairs /splei-sprei/ and /leirei/. Stimuli were presented monaurally and data were obtained from 24 right-handed subjects and 8 left-handed subjects, each of whom responded to both word pairs and with each ear. In a series of choice reaction time experiments members of minimal pairs of English words were presented monaurally to the right and left ears of right-handed subjects, who made a key-pressing response indicating the word they had heard. The word pairs used were /pit:bit/, /bit:bet/, /lei:rei/ and /splei:sprei/; the stimuli were recorded natural utterances. The Identification and Discrimination of Synthetic Vowels
A series of thirteen two-formant vowels was synthesized and used as the basis of labelling and discrimination tests with a group of English-speaking listeners. The sounds varied only in F1/F2 plot and the resulting vowel qualities were such that listeners found no difficulty in assigning each sound to one of three phonemic categories, those of the vowels in bid, bed and bad. Effects of Delayed Visual Control on Writing, Drawing and Tracing
Writing, drawing to verbal instruction and tracing were recorded on a combination of a telescriber with a short-term information store resulting in visual delay. The resulting conflict of visual and kinaesthetic feed-back slowed down performance and resulted in errors such as overshooting, repetition and wrong spacing. The experiments reported in this paper are an attempt to explore the influence of certain physical cues on the perception of linguistic stress patterns. The material chosen was a group of English words in which a change of function from noun to verb is commonly associated with a shift of stress from the first to the second syllable.
