  • Dalit religion

    Open Access•P Sanal Mohan, Joel Lee•ARTICLE•Religion Compass•2022•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 29

A reckoning with the question of Dalit religion is overdue. The religious worlds of that swath of the population of South Asia subject to the structural violence of "untouchability" have long been misapprehended-a consequence, in large part, of classificatory practices of the colonial and postcolonial state-as a kind of unlettered adjunct to Hinduism. This article assembles scholarly findings of recent years to foreground how Dalits themselves ha…

  • Colonial Transformations

    P Sanal Mohan•CHAPTER•Modernity of Slavery•2015

  • Modernity of Slavery

    P Sanal Mohan•BOOK•Modernity of Slavery•2015

This book tells the story of Cherumas, Kuravas, Parayas, Pulayas, and Thanda Pulayas—the slave castes of nineteenth-century Kerala—and their tryst with Christianity. These castes comprised nearly one-sixth of the population and were 'owned' by upper castes, princely states, and even Europeans. In the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, when European missionaries began working among the slave castes, thousands joined the Church. Their generational…

  • Religion, social space and identity

P Sanal Mohan•ARTICLE•South Asia Journal of South Asian…•2005

This paper seeks to analyse one of the social movements of twentieth century Kerala that tried to engage with the problems of material and spiritual progress in the context of modernity by investigating the rise of the Prathyaksha Raksha Daiva Sabha (hereafter PRDS). The movement originated within the framework of missionary Christianity, but moved beyond the limits of the missionary project and eventually offered a critique of it. The introducto…
