Bronze Age Matting from the Heights of Vésztő-Mágor, Hungary
Tell settlements often provide a unique window into prehistoric lifeways due to remarkable preservation and safeguarding from modern disturbances. Vésztő-Mágor in Hungary is one such tell with stratigraphy, features and finds that reflect thousands of years of prehistoric settlement. In 2021, the Vésztő-Mágor Conservation and Exhibition Program began the work of stabilizing, documenting and preserving prehistoric deposits, features and artefacts …
Saving the past for the future
Tells are exceptional archaeological settings, valuable not only for examining prehistoric developments but also for their potential to serve as centers of public engagement and education. However, methodological guidelines for how to preserve and present excavated trenches to the public currently are underdeveloped, particularly regarding tell sites. This paper provides the first comprehensive overview of the Vésztő-Mágor Conservation and Exhibi…
Megmenteni a múltat a jövő számára
A jelen tanulmány első alkalo…
Stratagems and Back Spoils
Preservation strategies at earthen archaeological sites are challenging to develop and maintain in the long term. Environmental fluctuations, anthropogenic interference, and pedological composition are only a few factors that can impact deterioration pathways. Owing to these complexities, there will never be a one-size-fits-all strategy for preserving earthen sites. However, archaeological spoil—or backdirt—can be employed to mitigate many of the…

Pigment Use at Neolithic Çatalhöyük
The Neolithic settlement of Çatalhöyük offers an exceptional dataset for studying pigment usage over one-thousand years of the existence of the settlement. The inhabitants produced a rich palette of colors, with pigments applied to objects, in architectural paintings, and for treatment of the dead. This article discusses evidence of pigments at Neolithic Çatalhöyük based on data collected during the twenty-five years of research under the directo…
Not All That Is White Is Lime’—White Substances from Archaeological Burial Contexts
Archaeological burial contexts may include a variety of white substances, but few analyses have been published. This study reports on the physico‐chemical characterization of such residues from seven archaeological sites. It is often assumed that white materials from burial contexts are lime. Our findings demonstrate that they can be gypsum, calcite (chalk), aragonite, brushite, degraded metal, natural (gum) resins or synthetic polymer–based prod…
Spatial analysis and heritage conservation
This paper discusses new advances in heritage site monitoring using a geo-spatial method for assessing the state of preservation of earthen architecture overtime as a preventive conservation measure. The proposed method leverages a comprehensive (quantitative-qualitative) approach that gathers multi-temporal data including environmental information collected by means of environmental loggers, qualitative vulnerability assessment of mud-brick wall…
