The Nova Scotia Community Cancer Matrix
Arsenic Speciation and Metallomics Profiling of Human Toenails as a Biomarker to Assess Prostate Cancer Cases
Chronic exposure to inorganic arsenic and trace metals has been linked to prostate cancer, and altered arsenic methylation capacity may have an important role in arsenic carcinogenesis. Biomarkers may be able to elucidate this role. Our objectives were to characterize profiles of arsenic species and metallome in toenails and urine samples, compare profiles between prostate cancer cases and controls, and determine the discriminant ability of toena…
The association between physical activity and self-rated health in Atlantic Canadians
The population of Atlantic Canada is aging rapidly and has among the highest rates of chronic disease in the country. This cross-sectional study drew data from the Atlantic Partnership for Tomorrow's Health (Atlantic PATH) study to investigate the association between physical activity and self-rated health among adults in this population. The results suggest that physical activity is associated with and may help to improve perceived health status…
Rural‐Urban Disparities in Total Physical Activity, Body Composition, and Related Health Indicators
PURPOSE: To describe and compare the sociodemographic and lifestyle characteristics of urban and rural residents in Atlantic Canada. METHODS: Cross-sectional analyses of baseline data from the Atlantic Partnership for Tomorrow's Health cohort were conducted. Specifically, 17,054 adults (35-69 years) who provided sociodemographic characteristics, measures of obesity, and a record of chronic disease and health behaviors were included in the analyse…
Associations between Neighborhood Walkability, Physical Activity, and Chronic Disease in Nova Scotian Adults
Background : While neighborhood walkability has been shown to positively influence health behaviors, less is known about its impact on chronic disease. Our aim was to examine the association between walkability and self-reported physical activity in relation to chronic health conditions in an Atlantic Canadian population. Methods : Using data from the Atlantic Partnership for Tomorrow's Health, a prospective cohort study, we employed both a cross…
Rationale, design, and methods for Canadian alliance for healthy hearts and minds cohort study (CAHHM) – a Pan Canadian cohort study
CAHHM is a prospective cohort study designed to investigate the impact of community level factors, individual health behaviours, and access to health services, on cognitive function, subclinical vascular disease, fat distribution, and the development of chronic diseases among adults living in Canada
Small-area spatio-temporal analyses of bladder and kidney cancer risk in Nova Scotia, Canada
Modelling the spatio-temporal distribution of disease risk enabled the quantification of risk relative to expected background levels and the identification of high risk areas. It also permitted the determination of the relative stability of the observed patterns over time and in this study, pointed to excess risk potentially driven by exposure to risk factors that act in a sustained manner over time
Associations Between Exposure to Air Pollution and Gestational Hypertension in Urban Halifax
Introduction Exposure to air pollution has been linked with an increased risk for cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Few studies have examined possible associations between air pollution and gestational hypertension (GH). The prevalence of GH in Canada is approximately 6%, translating into roughly 300 women developing GH in Halifax annually. GH disorders account for 2–8% of pregnancy complications worldwide. Objective The current study exami…
Measuring food availability and accessibility among adolescents
Premature mortality due to social and material deprivation in Nova Scotia, Canada
Socioeconomic deprivation is an important determinant of health equity and affects every segment of the population. Deprivation accounted for 40% of premature deaths. The 4.3% of the study population living in extreme levels of socioeconomic deprivation experienced a twofold increased risk of dying prematurely. Nationally, this inequitable risk could translate into a significant public health burden

Promoting and Assessing ‘Deep Learning’ in Geography Fieldwork
Fieldwork is central to teaching and learning in geography. The assessment of student learning from fieldwork can, however, be problematic. This paper evaluates the use of reflective diaries for assessing level three undergraduate geography fieldwork. It is concluded that reflective fieldwork diaries offer an innovative and flexible approach to teaching, learning and assessment that encourages deep learning. The method enhances students' critical…

Is overweight and obesity in 9–10-year-old children in Liverpool related to deprivation and/or electoral ward when based on school attended
Objectives To determine whether weight problems in children (overweight, obesity and overweight or obesity) were related to deprivation indices when attributed only according to electoral ward of the school attended. To determine whether children with weight problems were more likely to be found in some wards rather than others, and to compare the distribution for boys and girls. Design Retrospective, cross-sectional, observational study. Setting…
Adverse pregnancy outcomes around incinerators and crematoriums in Cumbria, north west England, 1956–93
Study objective: To investigate the risk of stillbirth, neonatal death, and lethal congenital anomaly among babies of mothers living close to incinerators and crematoriums in Cumbria, north west England, 1956–93. Design: Retrospective cohort study. Logistic regression was used to investigate the risk of each outcome in relation to proximity at birth to incinerators and crematoriums, adjusting for social class, year of birth, birth order, and mult…
Estimating the Population of Young People by Ethnic Group in the Northern Region of England, 1971-91
We estimate the numbers of young people aged 0-24 years, resident in the Northern Region in 1971, 1981, and 1991 by ethnic group, age, sex, and birth place (inside-outside the United Kingdom). In 1991 the numbers of residents by ethnic group, age, and sex were obtained from the census and adjusted for underenumeration; the numbers born inside and outside the United Kingdom were estimated from the 1991 Census Sample of Anonymised Records (SAR). In…
