  • Using Sensor Data to Identify Factors Affecting Internal Air Quality within 279 Lower Income Households in Cornwall, South West of England

Open Access•Christopher Johnes, Richard A Sharpe et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2023

    (1) Background: Poor air quality affects health and causes premature death and disease. Outdoor air quality has received significant attention, but there has been less focus on indoor air quality and what drives levels of diverse pollutants in the home, such as particulate matter, and the impact this has on health; (2) Methods: This study conducts analysis of cross-sectional data from the Smartline project. Analyses of data from 279 social housin…

    Open Access•Arlene J Stein, Alexander J Stein et al.•ARTICLE•Public Health Nutrition•2007

Objective To estimate the potential impact of zinc biofortification of rice and wheat on public health in India and to evaluate its cost-effectiveness compared with alternative interventions and international standards. Design The burden of zinc deficiency (ZnD) in India was expressed in disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) lost. Current zinc intakes were derived from a nationally representative household food consumption survey (30-day recall)…

Data sources Electronic databases, personal files, and hand search of reviews, bibliographies of books, abstracts and proceedings of international conferences. Review methods RCTs evaluating change in anthropometry with interventions that included oral or parenteral iron supplementation, or ir…

  • Stable isotope dilution techniques for assessing vitamin A status and bioefficacy of provitamin A carotenoids in humans

    Open Access•Harold C Furr, Michael H Green et al.•ARTICLE•Public Health Nutrition•2005

Vitamin A deficiency is a major global public health problem. Among the variety of techniques that are available for assessing human vitamin A status, evaluating the provitamin A nutritional values of foodstuffs and estimating human vitamin A requirements, isotope dilution provides the most accurate estimates. Although the relative expense of isotope dilution restricts its applications, it has an important function as the standard of reference fo…

  • Defining nutritional status of women in developing countries

    Open Access•Penelope Nestel, Shea Rutstein•ARTICLE•Public Health Nutrition•2002

Objective: To define a de facto reference body mass index (BMI) for women in developing countries and compare its performance with the Quetelet BMI. Design: A logarithmic equation for elite wt/ht references was developed using the weight (wt) and height (ht) of 10 524 non-pregnant elite mothers. Functional outcomes were compared using both BMIs. Setting: Forty-six national surveys from 36 developing countries. Subjects: Mothers 15–49 years old. R…

  • Undernutrition among Honduran children 12-71 months old

Open Access•Penelope Nestel, Alejandro Melara et al.•ARTICLE•Revista Panamericana de Salud…•1999

In 1996, the Ministry of Health of Honduras conducted a national micronutrient survey that included anthropometric measurements to determine the nutrition status of children 12-71 months old. Among the 1,744 children who participated, 38% of them were stunted, including 14% who were severely stunted; 24% were underweight, of which 4% were severely underweight; and 1% were wasted, of which 0.1% were severely wasted. The country can be divided into…

  • Vitamin A deficiency and anemia among children 12-71 months old in Honduras

Open Access•Penelope Nestel, Alejandro Melara et al.•ARTICLE•Revista Panamericana de Salud…•1999

Vitamin A deficiency (VAD) and iron deficiency anemia (IDA) have been recognized as public health problems in Honduras for over 30 years. This paper, based on the 1996 National Micronutrient Survey on 1678 children 12-71 months of age, presents the results for vitamin A status and anemia prevalence, as well as the level of vitamin A in sugar at the household level. The results showed that 14% of the children were subclinically vitamin A deficient…

  • Nutrition of Honduran mothers/caretakers

Open Access•Penelope Nestel, Alejandro Mellara et al.•ARTICLE•Revista Panamericana de Salud…•1999

In 1996, the Honduran Ministry of Health conducted a national micronutrient survey of children 12-71 months old, which also included an assessment of the nutrition status of their mothers/caretakers. The 1,126 mothers/caretakers who participated in the survey tended to be short and plump. About 15% of them were at obstetric risk by virtue of their short stature and/or low body weight. About 9% had chronic energy deficiency (CED), but 27% were at …

  • The effect of vitamin A supplementation on the growth of preschool children in the Sudan

Wafaie W Fawzi, M Guillermo Herrera et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1997•Citada por: 8•Referencias: 15

OBJECTIVES: This study assessed the effect of vitamin A supplementation at 6-month intervals on child growth. METHODS: Sudanese children (n = 28,740) 6 to 72 months of age were weighed and measured at baseline and at each of three follow-up visits. RESULTS: Periodic vitamin A supplementation had no effect on the rate of weight or height gain in the total population or on the incidence of wasting, stunting, or wasting and stunting among children w…

  • Lipid intakes of Maasai women and children

Penelope Nestel, P S Nestel et al.•ARTICLE•Ecology of Food and Nutrition•1993

The traditional Maasai diet of meat, milk and blood is generally thought to be high in fat. Because of this much of the research carried out on the Maasai has been related to serum lipid levels. Few of these studies, however, have quantified dietary fat intake. This paper describes the Maasai diet and discusses the nutritional value of milk and dietary lipid intakes of 127 women and 411 children over a one year period. Lipid intakes ranged by age…

  • Nutritional status of under five year olds in North Sudan

Penelope Nestel, P S Nestel et al.•ARTICLE•Ecology of Food and Nutrition•1992

The drought of 1983–1985 in Sudan led to a large number of children becoming undernourished. In order to determine the magnitude of the problem a study was set up to assess the nutritional status of under five year olds across north Sudan, over four periods of time, during 1986–1987. Data were collected on just under 80,000 children from 50,000 households. Undernutrition was widespread across north Sudan with 32% of under five year olds being chr…

  • Food intake and growth in the Maasai

    Penelope Nestel, P S Nestel•ARTICLE•Ecology of Food and Nutrition•1989

The traditional staple diet of the Maasai consists of cow milk and maizemeal, but there is variation in this diet depending on age. Young children are dependent on dairy products for both protein and energy and as a result their diet is particularly high in fat. As children get older, maizemeal becomes increasingly important in the diet, and carbohydrate rather than fat becomes the prime source of energy. The energy intakes of 411 Maasai children…

  • Potential deficiencies of a pastoral diet

Penelope Nestel, C Geissler•ARTICLE•Ecology of Food and Nutrition•1986

The staple diet of the Maasai is cow's milk and maizemeal, neither of which are rich in iron or ascorbic acid. In view of this, the seasonal variation in food iron, and ascorbic acid intakes of Maasai women and children was determined from bi‐monthly 24‐hour recalls, validated against 3‐day weighed intakes, over a one‐year period. Subjects were screened for signs of iron and ascorbic acid deficiencies. Iron intakes from food were low but water wa…
