  • Optimizing the cascade of prevention to protect people from tuberculosis

Open Access•Alberto Matteelli, Gavin Churchyard et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2024

The provision of tuberculosis preventive treatment is one of the critical interventions to reduce tuberculosis incidence and ultimately eliminate the disease, yet we still miss appropriate tools for an impactful intervention and treatment coverage remains low. We used recent data, epidemiological estimates, and research findings to analyze the challenges of each step of the cascade of tuberculosis prevention that currently delay the strategy impl…

  • Effects of programmatic interventions to improve the management of latent tuberculosis

    Open Access•Mercedes Yanes‐Lane, Mercedes Yanes-Lane et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2021

In this follow-up study, we observed a sustained effect of interventions to strengthen the latent TB infection cascade of care on increasing the number of household contacts starting latent TB infection treatment

  • A qualitative meta-synthesis of facilitators and barriers to tuberculosis diagnosis and treatment in Nigeria

    Open Access•Charity Oga‐Omenka, Lawrence Wakdet et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2021

Case finding and treatment for TB in Nigeria currently depends more on individual patients presenting voluntarily to the hospital for care, necessitating an understanding of patient behaviors towards TB diagnosis and treatment. Our synthesis has identified several related factors that shape patients' behavior towards TB management at individual, community and health system levels that can inform future interventions

  • Factors influencing diagnosis and treatment initiation for multidrug-resistant/rifampicin-resistant tuberculosis in six sub-Saharan African countries

    Open Access•Charity Oga‐Omenka, Azhee Tseja-Akinrin et al.•ARTICLE•BMJ Global Health•2020

  • Ease and equity of access to free DR-TB services in Nigeria- a qualitative analysis of policies, structures and processes

Open Access•Charity Oga‐Omenka, Florence Bada et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal for Equity…•2020

In the context of Nigeria's low case-finding and treatment coverage, applying an equity of access framework was necessary to highlight gaps in care. Differing social contexts of patients adversely affected their access to DR-TB care. We identified several strengths in DR-TB care delivery, including the current financial support that should be sustained. Our findings highlight the need for government's commitment and continued interventions

  • Can BCG be useful to mitigate the Covid-19 pandemic? A Canadian perspective

Open Access•P De Wals, Dick Menzies et al.•ARTICLE•Canadian Journal of Public Health•2020•Referencias: 32

  • Disrupting a cycle of mistrust

    Open Access•Stephanie Law, Amrita Daftary et al.•ARTICLE•Social Science & Medicine•2019•Citada por: 5•Referencias: 32

  • Modeling the impact of tuberculosis interventions on epidemiologic outcomes and health system costs

Open Access•Olivia Oxlade, Amy S Piatek et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2015

In all settings, the greatest benefit will come from early diagnosis of all forms of TB. Once this has been achieved more specific interventions, such as those targeting HIV, drug resistance or the private sector can be integrated to increase impact

  • The impact of tuberculosis on health utility

Open Access•Melissa Bauer, Sara Ahmed et al.•ARTICLE•Quality of Life Research•2014

  • Cost-effectiveness of novel vaccines for tuberculosis control

    Open Access•Chia‐Lin Tseng, Chia-Lin Tseng et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2011

Investment in an improved TB vaccine is predicted to result in considerable cost savings, as well as a reduction in TB morbidity and TB-related mortality, when added to existing control strategies. For a vaccine with waning efficacy, a prime-boost strategy is more cost-effective in the long term

  • Tuberculosis and homelessness in Montreal

Open Access•Jason Tan de Bibiana, Carmine Rossi et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2011

TB cases among homeless persons in Montreal raise concerns about delayed diagnosis and ongoing local transmission

  • Direct and indirect costs of tuberculosis among immigrant patients in the Netherlands

Open Access•Sandra V Kik, Sandra PJ Olthof et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2009

Even in a country with a good health insurance system that covers medication and consultation costs, patients do have substantial extra expenditures. Furthermore, our patients lost on average 2.7 months of productive days. TB patients are economically vulnerable

  • Tuberculosis screening of travelers to higher-incidence countries

Open Access•Michael Tan, Dick Menzies et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2008

A single post-trip tuberculin skin test was the most cost-effective strategy considered, for travelers from the United States or Canada. The analysis did not evaluate the use of interferon-gamma release assays, which would be most relevant for travelers who received BCG vaccination after infancy, as in many European countries. Screening decisions should reflect duration of travel, tuberculosis incidence, and commitment to treat latent infection

  • Knowledge and practices of medical students to prevent tuberculosis transmission in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Open Access•Eleny Guimarães Teixeira, Dick Menzies et al.•ARTICLE•Revista Panamericana de Salud…•2008

Many medical students are not aware of the main routes of TB infection, and lectures on TB are not sufficient to change knowledge and practices. Regardless of knowledge about TB transmission, students engage in risky behaviors: more than two-thirds do not use a protective mask when examining an active TB case. We suggest innovative, effective active learning experiences to change this scenario

  • Costs for Tuberculosis Care in Canada

  • Impact of Dots expansion on tuberculosis related outcomes and costs in Haiti

Open Access•Vary Jacquet, Willy Morose et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2006

A modest investment for DOTS expansion in Haiti would provide considerable humanitarian benefit by reducing tuberculosis-related morbidity, mortality and costs for patients and their families. These benefits, together with projected minimal Haitian government savings, argue strongly for donor support for DOTS expansion
