  • Evaluation of oral cholera vaccine (Euvichol-Plus) effectiveness against Vibrio cholerae in Bangladesh

Open Access•Farhana Khanam, Md Taufiqul Islam et al.•ARTICLE•BMJ Global Health•2025

INTRODUCTION: Millions of Euvichol-Plus doses have been deployed from the global oral cholera vaccine stockpile in over 20 cholera-affected countries. However, information on Euvichol-Plus's effectiveness is limited. Using this vaccine in a cholera epidemic in Dhaka, Bangladesh, provided the opportunity to evaluate the vaccine effectiveness (VE) using a test-negative design. METHODS: A two-dose regimen of Euvichol-Plus was administered to individ…

  • Feasibility and acceptability of bubble continuous positive airway pressure oxygen therapy for the treatment of childhood severe pneumonia and hypoxaemia in Bangladeshi children

Open Access•Mohammod Jobayer Chisti, Trevor Duke et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Global Health•2023

Background: Effective management of hypoxaemia is key to reducing pneumonia deaths in children. In an intensive care setting within a tertiary hospital in Bangladesh, bubble continuous positive airway pressure (bCPAP) oxygen therapy was beneficial in reducing deaths in this population. To inform a future trial, we investigated the feasibility of introducing bCPAP in this population in non-tertiary/district hospitals in Bangladesh. Methods: We con…

Open Access•Mohammod Jobayer Chisti, Ahmed Ehsanur Rahman et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Global Health•2023

Background: Bubble continuous positive airway pressure (bCPAP) oxygen therapy has been shown to be safe and effective in treating children with severe pneumonia and hypoxaemia in Bangladesh. Due to lack of adequate non-invasive ventilatory support during coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) crisis, we aimed to evaluate whether bCPAP was safe and feasible when adapted for use in adults with similar indications. Methods: O pressure, in two tertiary …

  • The genomic epidemiology of multi-drug resistant invasive non-typhoidal Salmonella in selected sub-Saharan African countries

Open Access•Se Eun Park, Duy Thanh Pham et al.•ARTICLE•BMJ Global Health•2021

Background Invasive non-typhoidal Salmonella (iNTS) is one of the leading causes of bacteraemia in sub-Saharan Africa. We aimed to provide a better understanding of the genetic characteristics and transmission patterns associated with multi-drug resistant (MDR) iNTS serovars across the continent. Methods A total of 166 iNTS isolates collected from a multi-centre surveillance in 10 African countries (2010–2014) and a fever study in Ghana (2007–200…

  • Organization and implementation of an oral cholera vaccination campaign in an endemic urban setting in Dhaka, Bangladesh

Open Access•Iqbal Ansary Khan, Ashraful Islam Khan et al.•ARTICLE•Global Health Action•2019

Bangladesh has historically been cholera endemic, with seasonal cholera outbreaks occurring each year. In collaboration with the government of Bangladesh, the Infectious Diseases Division, International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh (icddr,b) initiated operational research to test strategies to reach the high-risk urban population with an affordable oral cholera vaccine (OCV) "ShancholTM" and examine its effectiveness in redu…

  • Clinical, epidemiological, and spatial characteristics of Vibrio parahaemolyticus diarrhea and cholera in the urban slums of Kolkata, India

Open Access•Suman Kanungo, Dipika Sur et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2012

We report coexistence of the two vibrios in the slums of Kolkata. The two etiologies of diarrhea had a similar seasonality but had distinguishing clinical features. The risk factors and the high risk areas for the two diseases differ from one another suggesting different modes of transmission of these two pathogens

  • Estimating the private benefits of vaccination against cholera in Beira, Mozambique

Open Access•Maryse Jeuland, Marc Jeuland et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Development Economics•2009•Citada por: 6•Referencias: 3

  • Vaccination greatly reduces disease, disability, death and inequity worldwide

Open Access•FE Andre, André Fe et al.•ARTICLE•Bulletin of the World Health…•2008

In low-income countries, infectious diseases still account for a large proportion of deaths, highlighting health inequities largely caused by economic differences. Vaccination can cut health-care costs and reduce these inequities. Disease control, elimination or eradication can save billions of US dollars for communities and countries. Vaccines have lowered the incidence of hepatocellular carcinoma and will control cervical cancer. Travellers can…

  • Using private demand studies to calculate socially optimal vaccine subsidies in developing countries

Open Access•Joseph Cook, Maryse Jeuland et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Policy Analysis and…•2008•Citada por: 5•Referencias: 3

Although it is well known that vaccines against many infectious diseases confer positive economic externalities via indirect protection, analysts have typically ignored possible herd protection effects in policy analyses of vaccination programs. Despite a growing literature on the economic theory of vaccine externalities and several innovative mathematical modeling approaches, there have been almost no empirical applications. The first objective …

  • Comparisons of predictors for typhoid and paratyphoid fever in Kolkata, India

Open Access•Dipika Sur, Mohammad Ali et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2007

There was a close correlation between the characteristics detected based on individual cases and characteristics associated with high incidence areas. Because the comparison of risk factors of populations living in high versus low risk areas is statistically very powerful this methodology holds promise to detect risk factors associated with diseases using geographic information systems

Peter I Folb, Ewa Bernatowska et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2004•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 23

Established in 1999, the Global Advisory Committee on Vaccine Safety advises the World Health Organization (WHO) on vaccine-related safety issues and enables WHO to respond promptly, efficiently, and with scientific rigor to issues of vaccine safety with potential global importance. The committee also assesses the implications of vaccine safety for practice worldwide and for WHO policies. We describe the principles on which the committee was esta…

  • Breastfeeding practices in a cohort of inner-city women

Open Access•Lucinda England, Lucinda J England et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2003

Breastfeeding initiation rates and duration were suboptimal in this inner-city population. Many women who did not breastfeed had contraindications and/or were concerned about passing dangerous things to their infants through breast milk. It is important to consider the prevalence of contraindications to breastfeeding when evaluating breastfeeding practices in high-risk communities
