Long Covid and financial outcomes
BACKGROUND: Long-term sequelae of COVID-19 (long COVID) include muscle weakness, fatigue, breathing difficulties and sleep disturbance over weeks or months. Using UK longitudinal data, we assessed the relationship between long COVID and financial disruption. METHODS: We estimated associations between long COVID (derived using self-reported length of COVID-19 symptoms) and measures of financial disruption (subjective financial well-being, new bene…
Associations of schooling type, qualification type and subsequent health in mid-adulthood
BACKGROUND: Education is thought to benefit health. However, existing studies have predominantly focused on educational attainment-the type of institution attended has been overlooked, despite being an important indicator of education resources, quality, and future socioeconomic outcomes. In this study, we investigated associations between type of high school or university attended and multiple adult health outcomes. METHODS: The 1970 British Coh…
Mental and social wellbeing and the UK coronavirus job retention scheme
During the early stages of the pandemic, those furloughed had increased risk of poor mental and social wellbeing, but furloughed workers fared better than those who became unemployed, suggesting that furlough may have partly mitigated poorer outcomes
Changes in the behavioural determinants of health during the Covid-19 pandemic
BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic is expected to have far-reaching consequences on population health. We investigated whether these consequences included changes in health-impacting behaviours which are important drivers of health inequalities. METHODS: Using data from five representative British cohorts (born 2000-2002, 1989-1990, 1970, 1958 and 1946), we investigated sleep, physical activity (exercise), diet and alcohol intake (N=14 297). We in…
Associations of acute conflict with equity in maternal healthcare
The association between acute conflict and maternal services usage indicated some vertical equity, as equity patterns during conflict differed from recent trends in Egypt. The association between conflict and maternal care usage among potentially marginalised groups was minimal and not notably inequitable. Specific strategies should be included in maternal health policies to mitigate the unpredictable effect of conflict on maternal care equity. F…
Investigating associations between the built environment and physical activity among older people in 20 UK towns
BACKGROUND: Policy initiatives such as WHO Age Friendly Cities recognise the importance of the urban environment for improving health of older people, who have both low physical activity (PA) levels and greater dependence on local neighbourhoods. Previous research in this age group is limited and rarely uses objective measures of either PA or the environment. METHODS: We investigated the association between objectively measured PA (Actigraph GT3x…
Life-course partnership history and midlife health behaviours in a population-based birth cohort
BACKGROUND: Marital and partnership history is strongly associated with health in midlife and later life. However, the role of health behaviours as an explanatory mechanism remains unclear. The aim of this study was to investigate prospective associations between life-course partnership trajectories (taking into account timing, non-marital cohabitation, remarriage and marital transitions) and health behaviours measured in midlife. METHODS: We ana…
Optimising measurement of health-related characteristics of the built environment
The role of the neighbourhood environment in influencing health behaviours continues to be an important topic in public health research and policy. Foot-based street audits, virtual street audits and secondary data sources are widespread data collection methods used to objectively measure the built environment in environment-health association studies. We compared these three methods using data collected in a nationally representative epidemiolog…
Ploubidis et al. Respond
Thank you for the opportunity to respond to Strohschein’s letter regarding our published article in AJPH. The main issue raised by Strohschein is that our study lacks a test of interaction for one of our findings, namely that men derive more health benefits from marriage than women. Strohschein cites a newspaper article, which appears to reference our article. Unfortunately, the newspaper article misrepresents our findings. We simply did not find…
Life-Course Partnership Status and Biomarkers in Midlife
Objectives. We examined the association between trajectories of partnership status over the life course and objectively measured health indicators in midlife. Methods. We used data from 4 waves (1981, 1991, 2000, and 2002–2004) of the British National Child Development Study (NCDS), a prospective cohort study that includes all people born in Britain during 1 week in March 1958 (n = 18 558). Results. After controlling for selection attributable to…
Clinical problems in a post war British cohort reaching retirement
Introduction The health of the post war ‘baby boomers’ will dominate the health and social care systems for decades to come. We know little about the prevalence of clinical problems in these postwar birth cohorts. Objectives To describe the prevalence of significant clinical problems at 60–64 years in the Medical Research Council (MRC) National Survey of Heath and Development; to examine whether these problems cluster in the same individuals and …
O1-2.6 Intergenerational continuity of gestational duration in three generations of Swedish males and females
Objective We analysed associations between gestational duration in grandchildren and their biological grandparents. Methods The Uppsala Birth Cohort Multigenerational Study includes manually collected archive data on a representative cohort of males and females born in Uppsala, Sweden 1915–1929 and information on descendants of the cohort obtained through linkage to routine data registers. Using path analysis, we analysed 7915 grandparents and th…
