This study assessed the extent, type, and content of food and beverage advertising near schools in urban and rural settings in Kenya. We conducted a cross-sectional study in June–July 2021 across three…
Tool for assessing food industry commitments and practices to address the double burden of malnutrition
BACKGROUND: Many low- and middle-income countries face a double burden of malnutrition, i.e., a co-occurrence of undernutrition with overweight, obesity, or other diet-related noncommunicable diseases. In an increasingly connected global food system, multinational and domestic food industry actors - through their commercial practices and corporate political activity - both contribute to the double burden of malnutrition and hold potential to addr…
Trends in sales of sugar-sweetened beverages and associated type 2 diabetes burden in nine African countries
Background Sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) are recognized contributors to the global rise in non-communicable diseases. While the link between SSB intake and adverse health outcomes is well established, long-term data from African countries are limited. Objective To assess trends in SSB sales and their associations with type 2 diabetes (T2D) burden across nine African countries from 2010 to 2024.Methods We conducted an ecological time-series anal…
Nutritional quality and on-package marketing of pre-packaged foods and non-alcoholic beverages for sale in Senegalese supermarkets

Eating disorders across population groups with different weight status in Belgium
EDs disproportionally affect people with higher weight. This underscores the necessity for public health interventions that address the intertwined nature of EDs and obesity. Traditional weight-centric health campaigns focusing on individual responsibility may inadvertently contribute to the problem by promoting weight stigma. An integrative preventative approach holds promise for more effective management and prevention of EDs and obesity in the…

Which government policies to create sustainable food systems have the potential to simultaneously address undernutrition, obesity and environmental sustainability
INTRODUCTION: A transformation of food systems is urgently needed, given their contribution to three ongoing and interlinked global health pandemics: (1) undernutrition and food insecurity, (2) obesity and non-communicable diseases (NCDs), and (3) climate change and biodiversity loss. As policymakers make decisions that shape food systems, this study aimed to identify and prioritise policies with double- or triple-duty potential to achieve health…
Determinants of food insecurity among adults residing in peri-urban municipal settings in Flanders, Belgium
Food insecurity is a global public health issue associated with noncommunicable diseases. Individual factors are strongly associated with food insecurity, but there is limited literature on the broader impact of both the social and food environments on food insecurity in non-English speaking European countries, given that the research was predominantly conducted in Anglophone settings. In addition, these studies have mostly been conducted in urba…

The cost of healthy versus current diets in the Netherlands for households with a low, middle and high education
The cost of food is an important driver of food choice and most evidence suggests that healthier diets are more costly than less healthy diets. However, current attempts to model the cost of healthy and current diets do not take into account the variation in diets or food prices. We calculated the differential cost between healthy and current diets for households with a low, medium and high education in the Netherlands using the DIETCOST program.…
The Changing Landscape of Food Deserts and Swamps over More than a Decade in Flanders, Belgium

A deterministic approach was used whereby consumption quantities of tap …

Young adults
Young adults are a highly desirable target population for energy-dense, nutrient-poor (EDNP) food and beverage marketing. But little research, resources, advocacy and policy action have been directed at this age group, despite the fact that young adults are gaining weight faster than previous generations and other population groups. Factors such as identity development and shifting interpersonal influences differentiate young adulthood from other…
Socio-economic inequalities in diet and body weight
Diets low in fruits, vegetables and whole grains, and high in saturated fat, salt and sugar, are the major contributors to the burden of chronic diseases globally Previous research, and studies in this issue of Public Health Nutrition, show that unhealthy diets are more commonly observed among socio-economically disadvantaged groups and are key contributors to their higher rates of chronic disease

Nutritional quality of foods and non-alcoholic beverages advertised on Mexican television according to three nutrient profile models
The majority of foods and beverages advertised on Mexican TV do not comply with any nutritional quality standards, and thus should not be marketed to children. The nutritional quality standards applied by the Mexican regulation are much weaker than those applied by the WHO Europe and United Kingdom. The Mexican government should improve the nutrition standards in its new regulation, especially the sugar cut off points
