A non-compensatory analysis of quality of life in breast cancer survivors using multivariate hidden Markov modeling
Symptom clusters in women with breast cancer
Evaluation of the Quality of Life in Adult Cancer Survivors (QLACS) scale for early post-treatment breast cancer survivors
Longitudinal Analysis of the Association Between Vasomotor Symptoms and Race/Ethnicity Across the Menopausal Transition
Objectives. We investigated whether vasomotor symptom reporting or patterns of change in symptom reporting over the perimenopausal transition among women enrolled in a national study differed according to race/ethnicity. We also sought to determine whether racial/ethnic differences were explained by sociodemographic, health, or lifestyle factors. Methods. We followed 3198 women enrolled in the Study of Women’s Health Across the Nation during 1996…
Assessing Quality of Life in Adult Cancer Survivors (QLACS)
Quality of Life in Diverse Groups of Midlife Women
Racial/Ethnic Differences in the Prevalence of Depressive Symptoms Among Middle-Aged Women
Objectives. We examined racial/ethnic differences in significant depressive symptoms among middle-aged women before and after adjustment for socioeconomic, health-related, and psychosocial characteristics. Methods. Racial/ethnic differences in unadjusted and adjusted prevalence of significant depressive symptoms (score ≥ 16 on the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression [CES-D] Scale) were assessed with univariate and multiple logistic regres…
Depression During the Menopausal Transition
The perception that menopause leads to mood disturbances such as depression has a long history. How did these beliefs come about, and are they supported by the scientific literature? This article reviews the theories of menopause and depression, the scientific literature, and the implications of these findings for prevention and treatment. Epidemiologic studies of menopausal status and depression do not provide consistent evidence of an associati…
Sexual functioning and practices in a multi‐ethnic study of midlife women
This study examined the sexual practices and function of midlife women by ethnicity (African American, Caucasian, Chinese, Hispanic, Japanese) and menopausal status. Sexual behavior was compared in 3,262 women in the baseline cohort of SWAN. Participants were 42 to 52 years old, premenopausal or early perimenopausal, and not hysterectomized or using hormones. Analysis used multivariate proportional odds regression. In our sample, 79% had engaged …
Health-Related Quality of Life in a Multiethnic Sample of Middle-Aged Women
BACKGROUND: Relatively little is known about the association between menopause and health-related quality of life (HRQL) across ethnic groups. OBJECTIVES: To examine the association between HRQL and early perimenopause and ethnicity, adjusting for health, lifestyle, psychosocial, and sociodemographic factors. RESEARCH DESIGN: Questionnaires were administered to pre- and early perimenopausal women. SUBJECTS: We studied a cohort of 3302 black, Chin…
Is there a menopausal syndrome? Menopausal status and symptoms across racial/ethnic groups
Distinguishing between quality of life and health status in quality of life research
Attitudes Toward Menopause and Aging Across Ethnic/Racial Groups
OBJECTIVE: Attitudes have a potential role to play in the experience of menopause. The objective of this study was to examine the degree to which attitudes toward menopause and aging vary across ethnic groups and menopausal status (ie, premenopausal through postmenopausal). METHODS: More than 16,000 women were interviewed by telephone as part of the Study of Women's Health Across the Nation. They represented five ethnic/racial groups (African Ame…
Use of the MQoL-HIV with asymptomatic HIV-positive patients
Development of the Multidimensional Index of Life Quality
OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to design a multidimensional measure of health-related quality of life appropriate for patients with cardiovascular disease that was psychometrically sound, brief, and easy to administer. METHODS: Qualitative interviews conducted with healthy subjects and patients with cardiovascular diseases identified nine major quality of life domains. Based on the responses of 129 cardiovascular disease patients recru…
The effect of widowhood on health
Accuracy of perceptions of heart attack risk
Using perceived risk of a heart attack, we examined the relative importance of perceived risk factors and sociodemographic variables on subjects' perception of heart attack risk, the relationship between perceived and objectively measured heart attack risk, and the effect of health risk appraisal (HRA) feedback on risk perceptions. Data derive from a random sample of 732 Greater Boston, Massachusetts area men and women ages 25-65 years, who parti…
