  • Holocene vegetation dynamics and agricultural development at ancient Bubastis (Egypt)

Open Access•Philipp Garbe, Martin Behl et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Environmental…•2026

Bubastis is one of the most important ancient cities of the southeastern Nile Delta, continuously inhabited from around 3250 B.C.E. until its decline in the Roman Period. Although recent investigations have significantly advanced our understanding of its geomorphological development and settlement history, the region's vegetation and agricultural history has remained largely unexplored. This study provides the first Holocene paleovegetation recon…

  • The Holocene formation of inland sand dunes in the North of Schleswig-Holstein (Northern Germany) and its palaeoenvironmental significance

Open Access•Christian Stolz, Rainer Lehmann et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2026

Geomorphological investigations were carried out in the Süderlügum inland dune field and at two existing dune outcrops near Enge-Sande (North Frisia). The focus was on the age of the dunes, possible anthropogenic or climatically induced reactivation phases and their triggers against the backdrop of a palaeoenvironmental reconstruction. To this end, corings and outcrops were created, which were described and classified in terms of soil geography. …

  • Mapping and Geospatial Analysis of Ancient Terrace Agricultural Systems in Lucanas Province, Peruvian Andes, Based on Satellite Imagery, High‐Resolution DSMs, and Field Surveys

Open Access•C Mäder, Philipp Godde et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2025•Referencias: 5

This paper presents a unique set of maps and geospatial data covering 16 ancient terrace agricultural systems in the upper part of the Río Grande de Nasca drainage. These systems are located on the western Andean flank (1200 and 3800 m asl), in the districts of Llauta, Laramate, and Ocaña in Lucanas province, Ayacucho region, southern Peru (14.5° S). Spanning various periods of the prehispanic era (1000 bce –1532 ce ), only limited sections of th…

  • Paleoenvironmental Reconstruction of the Settlement Area of Ancient Bubastis (Tell Basta), Southeastern Nile Delta (Egypt)

    Open Access•Philipp Garbe, Amr Abd El‐raouf et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2025•Referencias: 1

Over the past century, archaeological investigations at the ancient city of Bubastis (Tell Basta) have revealed a complex urban landscape featuring temples, a palace, and cemeteries. However, the eastern part of the city remains poorly understood. According to Herodotus—the only historical textual source—and supported by surface finds, this area likely functioned as the main living quarter from at least the Late Period through the Roman Period. T…

  • An integrative approach to ancient agricultural terraces and forms of dependency

Open Access•C Mäder, Philipp Godde et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Environmental…•2024

This paper presents an integrative and interdisciplinary approach to the study of ancient agricultural terraces and food production systems. Our approach consists of (1) a resource dependency theoretical framework and (2) the application of a variety of archaeological and geoscientific methods, including archaeological and geomorphological surveys, archaeological excavations, drone surveys, mapping based on satellite imagery and high-resolution d…

  • A New Approach to Detecting Cheating in Sensitive Surveys

    Open Access•Julia Meister, Julia Meisters et al.•ARTICLE•Sociological Methods & Research•2024•Referencias: 60

Indirect questioning techniques such as the randomized response technique aim to control social desirability bias in surveys of sensitive topics. To improve upon previous indirect questioning techniques, we propose the new Cheating Detection Triangular Model. Similar to the Cheating Detection Model, it includes a mechanism for detecting instruction non-adherence, and similar to the Triangular Model, it uses simplified instructions to improve resp…

Cerro Llamocca is a mountain with a summit elevation of 4,487 m asl in the southern Peruvian Andes. This paper presents a first overview of recent archaeological and paleoenvironmental research in its vicinity, and introduces new results from archaeological surveys and strontium isotope analyses. Our survey data show how the wider Cerro Llamocca area comprises an extensive complex of archaeological sites, composed of different sectors with public…

  • Holocene landscape reconstruction in the surroundings of the Temple of Pepi I at ancient Bubastis, southeastern Nile Delta (Egypt)

    Open Access•Philipp Garbe, Amr Abd El‐raouf et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2023•Referencias: 7

In ancient Egypt, lakes, canals, and other water bodies were an essential part of the sacred landscape in which temples were embedded. In recent years, geoarchaeological research at the site of the Temple of Bastet at Bubastis in the southeastern Nile Delta has proven the existence of two water canals surrounding the temple. It has now been investigated whether these canals were connected to the Temple of Pepi I (2300–2250 B.C.E.), located approx…

  • Hermetic Cereal Storage in the Bronze Age

    Open Access•Laura Dietrich, Oliver Dietrich et al.•ARTICLE•Documenta Praehistorica•2022•Referencias: 8

The present paper explores the possibility to better understand the function of pits through phytolith and starch analysis. A case study from the Late Bronze Age/Early Iron Age settlement phase of Rotbav in southeastern Transylvania is discussed in detail. It appears that a large storage vessel originally sealed with a bowl was kept in a pit filled with chaff or straw to preserve its contents

  • Investigating the function of Pre-Pottery Neolithic stone troughs from Göbekli Tepe – An integrated approach

    Open Access•Laura Dietrich, Eva Götting-Martin et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2020•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 21

An integrated approach using contextual, use-wear, scientific and experimental methods was used to analyze the role of stone troughs of up to 165 l capacity at the Early Neolithic site Göbekli Tepe in the context of other stone containers found there. Around 600 (mostly fragmentary) vessels from the site constitute the largest known assemblage from the Pre-Pottery Neolithic of the Near East. Besides the large limestone troughs, it encompasses mid…

  • The sacred canals of the Temple of Bastet at Bubastis (Egypt)

    Open Access•Eva Lange-Athinodorou, Amr Abd El‐raouf et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2019•Referencias: 8

This contribution highlights recent findings of geomorphological and geophysical investigations that were undertaken at the excavation site of Bubastis (Eastern Nile Delta, Egypt) in order to find evidence of the existence and location of the sacred canals of Bubastis that were described by Herodotus in the 5th century BCE. None of the preceding archaeological missions have reported remains of these canals. Drilling and sediment analyses in 2018 …
