  • Air Pollutants and Breast Cancer Risk

Alexandra J White, Jaime E Hart et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2025•Referencias: 63

Objectives. To determine whether outdoor air pollution exposure is associated with breast cancer incidence. Methods. Residential-level concentrations of nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 , parts per billion [ppb]), fine particulate matter (PM 2.5 ; ≤ 2.5 μ/m 3 ) and ozone (ppb) in the United States were estimated for participants of the Nurses’ Health Studies, Women’s Health Initiative Clinical Trials and Observational Study Cohort, and Sister Study using h…

  • Maternal Fair/Poor Self-Rated Health and Adverse Infant Birth Outcomes

Dac A Teoli, Keith J Zullig et al.•ARTICLE•Health Care For Women International•2013

We conducted a cross-sectional, correlational analysis of the West Virginia Birth Score Program database examining the relationship between maternal self-rated health (SRH) and infant low birth weight (LBW), preterm birth, and small for gestational age (SGA). We found that, after controlling for covariates, mothers reporting fair/poor SRH were more likely to deliver an LBW infant (OR = 1.35, 95% CI = 1.14, 1.59), to deliver preterm (OR = 1.38, 95…

Open Access•Michael S Hendryx, Michael Hendryx et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Community Psychology•1997

This paper examines the relationship between self-reported mental health functioning and perceived community problems. Using linear regression and principal components analysis on data from a community survey of 1,826 residents, we find that mental health functioning is inversely related to perceptions of specific types of community problems such as poverty, racism, unemployment, and domestic violence. Individuals who live in geographic areas tha…

  • The Importance of Sense of Community on People's Perceptions of Their Health-Care Experiences

    Melissa M Ahern, Michael S Hendryx et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Care•1996•Referencias: 13

OBJECTIVES: The authors study the relationship between people's sense of community and problems they experience with the health-care system, specifically problems related to cost, access, provider choice, and satisfaction. METHODS: Data from a 1993 Florida poll (n = 1202) was used to conduct a multinomial logit analysis to estimate people's sense of community as a function of 13 characteristics and perceptions of community. Logit analysis was use…

  • The Impact of Cancer Screening Promotion by Rural Hospitals on Cancer Detection

    Michael S Hendryx, Michael Hendryx•ARTICLE•Medical Care•1993

Hospitals almost universally provide health promotion programs for community residents. There is a lack of evidence regarding these programs' impact on the detection or prevention of disease. The purpose of the present study was to determine whether rural hospital-based health promotion programs for cancer screening were associated with detection of greater numbers of cancer cases in the communities served by the hospitals over the years that the…
