Open Access•Jackline A Odhiambo, Louisa Ndunyu et al.•ARTICLE•Global Health Action•2026

BACKGROUND: Widowed women in sub-Saharan Africa bear a disproportionate burden of HIV/AIDS. OBJECTIVES: We examined the likely period of HIV exposure among widows living with HIV and the patterns and predictors of widowed women's HIV risk behaviors. • Widowhood stigma as a fundamental cause of poor mental, sexual, and reproductive health outcomes in sub-Saharan Africa

    Open Access•Jackline A Odhiambo, Louisa Ndunyu et al.•ARTICLE•SSM - Mental Health•2025

Widows in sub-Saharan Africa experience stigma linked to their social identity of widowhood. We thematically reviewed literature mentioning widowhood stigma and its effects in Africa. Applying the fundamental cause theory to this literatur…

  • Widowed and at risk

Open Access•Jackline A Odhiambo, Ali Mizarzardeh et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2025

From a decade long follow-up, we show a disproportionately high and increasing prevalence of HIV among widowed women in Siaya, Kenya. Among both widowed and married women, there was an association between living with HIV and younger age, 10-year younger sexual partners and experiencing forced sex. Policies that prioritize widowed women could assist in the development of targeted interventions that address the unique challenges of this important s…

  • Safety, effectiveness and immunogenicity of heterologous mRNA-1273 boost after prime with Ad26.COV2.S among healthcare workers in South Africa

Open Access•Nigel Garrett, Tarylee Reddy et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2024

Limited studies have been conducted on the safety and effectiveness of heterologous COVID-19 vaccine boosting in lower income settings, especially those with high-HIV prevalence., The Sisonke Heterologous mRNA-1273 boost after prime with Ad26.COV2.S (SHERPA) trial evaluated a mRNA-1273 boost after Ad26.COV2.S priming in South Africa. SHERPA was a single-arm, open-label, phase 3 study nested in the Sisonke implementation trial of 500000 healthcare…

  • Risk Factors Associated with HIV Acquisition in Males Participating in HIV Vaccine Efficacy Trials in South Africa

Open Access•Mookho Malahleha, Fatima Laher et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS and Behavior•2023

In South Africa, HIV acquisition risk has been studied less in people assigned male at birth. We studied the associations between risk behaviors, clinical features and HIV incidence amongst males in two South African HIV preventive vaccine efficacy trials. We used Cox proportional hazards models to test for associations between demographics, sexual behaviors, clinical variables and HIV acquisition among males followed in the HVTN 503 (n = 219) an…

  • Comparing the effect of a multisectoral agricultural intervention on HIV-related health outcomes between widowed and married women

    Open Access•Jackline A Odhiambo, Sheri D Weiser et al.•ARTICLE•Social Science & Medicine•2023•Referencias: 33

Future trials and programs targeting widowed women should bolster stigma reduction and social support

  • Gender equity in health research publishing in Africa

    Open Access•Anwaar Baobeid, Tara Faghani-Hamadani et al.•ARTICLE•BMJ Global Health•2022

INTRODUCTION: Women researchers find it more difficult to publish in academic journals than men, an inequity that affects women's careers and was exacerbated during the pandemic, particularly for women in low-income and middle-income countries. We measured publishing by sub-Saharan African (SSA) women in prestigious authorship positions (first or last author, or single author) during the time frame 2014-2016. We also examined policies and practic…

Open Access•Joseph J Valadez, Sima Berendes et al.•ARTICLE•BMJ Global Health•2020

Introduction: Is achievement of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 16 (building peaceful societies) a precondition for achieving SDG 3 (health and well-being in all societies, including conflict-affected countries)? Do health system investments in conflict-affected countries waste resources or benefit the public's health? To answer these questions, we examine the maternal, newborn, child and reproductive health (MNCRH) service provision during pr…

  • Measuring health system resilience in a highly fragile nation during protracted conflict

    Open Access•Jackline A Odhiambo, Jackline Odhiambo et al.•ARTICLE•Health Policy and Planning•2020•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 24

Health systems resilience (HSR) is defined as the ability of a health system to continue providing normal services in response to a crisis, making it a critical concept for analysis of health systems in fragile and conflict-affected settings (FCAS). However, no consensus for this definition exists and even less about how to measure HSR. We examine three current HSR definitions (maintaining function, improving function and achieving health system …
